Each April, Hambledon Parish Council hosts an “assembly” at the Village Hall where it updates residents on its activities over the previous 12 months, as do representatives of the many organisations, clubs and activities.
It is a largely informal occasion, shared over a glass of wine and refreshments at the start, and sometimes a guest speaker.
Until last year, that is. When England went into its first lockdown with the arrival of the Coronovairus pandemic, all gatherings were cancelled, including the Parish Assembly.
A year on, it is still not possible to meet in the Village Hall, although hopefully that will happen soon as we move, in stages, through the lifting of lockdown restrictions.
Anxious not to let another year pass, the parish council has decided to hold the assembly using video conferencing on the Zoom platform. It will take place on Thursday April 22nd, starting at 7.30. All residents are welcome to attend and invites have already gone out to speakers from local organisations.
Many will have become familiar with Zoom, or other similar video conferencing platforms. If not already a user, you will need to install Zoom on to your home device. Help on how to do this can be provided in advance and please look for all contact details at the end of this article.
Sadly, the parish council cannot offer the wine and refreshments, but please feel free to indulge in your own as you join in the meeting to listen to reports from the village shop, church, nursery school and St Dominic’s, football and cricket clubs, book and bridge clubs, pub, cyclists, village trust and community fund, magazine, website and more.
The meeting will last for about 90 minutes and will begin with a report from parish council chairman John Anderson. Questions can be taken at the end of the meeting.
If unable to attend on Zoom, a report of the meeting will appear in a forthcoming edition of the parish magazine, and on the website.
Although parish council meetings have, of necessity, been held on Zoom for the past year, this is the first time the village has attempted a larger-scale Zoom meeting. Please be patient. It will be helpful for attendees to join from from 15 minutes before the start time, to allow the clerk time to admit them.
In order to better manage the meeting, it is likely that only councillors, clerk, and speakers, in turn, will appear on screen, but all will be able to listen and and take part in questions at the end.
