Hambledon Shop Roof Replacement Project

The success of any enterprise depends in part on the roof over its head – and Hambledon Village Shop is no exception.  But nothing lasts for ever.

Twenty years ago, the Hambledon Village Trust purchased the shop (and the attached Pendle Cottage) shortly after it had reopened as a community venture.  Only when the Trust stepped in could the long-term future of the shop be assured. Over the intervening years the Trust has carried out major improvements to enable the shop to compete in modern trading conditions.  The addition of a thriving café and deli counter, and an upgrade of the Post Office, alongside well-stocked shelves has made it a popular destination.  In addition, the Trust has been up-grading the cottage.

It is hard to image life in Hambledon without the shop as a major focus.  However, a big challenge lies ahead.  The 18th century building is in urgent need of a new roof, and the financial support of villagers is vital if this is to be achieved.

Tiles have been falling off, beams need to be examined, there is no underlay and no insulation.  The flat roof over the shop frontage requires attention.  Piecemeal repairs and patching are no longer a viable option.

It is estimated that the work involved will cost in the region of £150,000.  This sum is way beyond the financial means of the Trust.  Its only income is from the rents it charges to the shop and cottage tenant.

So the time has come to launch another fund-raising campaign.

Previous appeals have demonstrated what the Village Shop means to the people of Hambledon.  Over the years villagers have organised fund-raising to improve the shop premises and responded with generosity to requests for help and support.

This time the Trust is asking people to donate to a special ring-fenced fund that has been established within the Hambledon Community Fund (HCF).  The Trust will of course be working on accessing whatever grants may be available.

The Trust has already been pledged donations amounting to £15,000 for this project.  Updates on progress of the appeal will appear on the village website and in the Parish Magazine.

The sooner the Trust receives donations the better.  Thank you in advance for your help.
