CHRISTMAS GREETINGS – AND A SPECIAL HAMBLEDONIAN 90th BIRTHDAY

Hambledon residents  turned out in large numbers at noon on Christmas Eve to join in the community singing of carols and seasonal songs outside the village shop.

A big thank-you goes to the organisers, the shop choir and to David Kirby and his musician friends for a wonderful and harmonious festive gathering.

The day before, Mic Coleman, who for so many years has been a stalwart of village activities, celebrated his 90th birthday. He and Sylvia had a busy day as friends dropped by to pass on their best wishes before a large family gathering later in the day. Mic has worked tirelessly for the village football and cricket teams, becoming president of both. He has been involved in the running of the village hall, the village fete and the produce show. He is also a former chairman of Hambledon Parish Council.

In 2012 he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honors “for services to sport and the community in Hambledon”. Mic has done so much for the good of the village and its residents and we all wish him the very best for the future.

And the Web Team sign off by sending its best wishes to all.

Cricket Club Beat The Village Shop in Tense Rematch

In a hastily arranged rematch on Sunday, Hambledon Cricket Cub did what they are meant to do and won a tightly fought game against the Hambledon Village Shop team.

The Cricket Club (friendly 2nd XI, not the mighty 1st team) scored 168 in their 30 overs with a belligerent innings of 84 from Woody, aided by 11 year old Oscar holding down the other end. The Village Shop bowlers did their best to restrict them and some tight bowling from Callan McIntyre and Deeg Garrod kept the cricket club score relatively modest. One of the highlights of the day was Andy Falk for the Shop team bowling to young Oscar for the Cricket Club, rumour has it there was an age difference of 102.

The Shop team responded strongly with an opening stand of 60 from Oscar Parker and Remi Trovo. Their demise saw a sprightly innings from Sean Sinnott (unfortunately curtailed by a pulled hamstring), then Andy Falk held down an end, while Callan McIntyre scored a sumptuous 56 not out before retiring. With 20 runs needed from 4 overs the Village Shop were in the box seat, but some excellent death bowling from the Cricket Club proved their undoing and the Shop fell 9 runs short at the end of their 30 overs.

Hambledon Cricket Club Match Report

Following a late cancellation from Cranleigh on Saturday afternoon, the league side picked up 28 points without a ball being bowled. Good for points but disappointing not to play to be perfectly honest.

On the plus side, the Friendly side were short of 4 players so the difference was easily made up with the addition of few eager league players. We played a very enjoyable match at Bramley with Hambledon agreeing to bat first without the need to toss a coin.

This was a timed game so that Bramley had a chance to draw 😉 We put on 181 all out without runs coming freely from Ben Plant 45, Oli Bayne 40 and Mark Burton 24. It was clear that 150 was probably too much for Bramley as they lost early wickets and never looked liked getting close to our score. We managed to spread the bowling about generously so that the game lasted until the final over. (stats are on Play cricket website) Euan Pusey got 3 for 6, Joe Herman 2 for 5 and Lee Hacker 2 for 22. The final over was given to Chase Pusey for his first bowl of the day with about 6 slips in the cordon! He got the final wicket lbw with just 2 balls left in the match!

It was a very entertaining afternoon with plenty of beer, cider, pimms and wine on offer all afternoon as well as a fabulous BBQ. A good day was had by all which was continued by the hard core in the Jolly Farmer in Bramley!

Thanks to all and especially the organisers at Bramley.

Hambledon Cricket Club’s youngsters to act as Mascots at the ‘World Cup’ Final!

Screen Shot 2017-05-02 at 15.28.14I am delighted to announce that our village cricket club has been asked to play a starring role in one of the biggest international cricket matches of the entire Summer. This is a very big day for the club, and one of which the whole village can be proud.

You have probably all enjoyed seeing our village youngsters cavorting about the cricket green on a Saturday morning, some of them as young as 6 years old! It is surely one of the happiest sights of the whole Summer. Well, suddenly these youngsters have come of age. On June 18th, at the Oval, 30 of our young cricketers will walk out arm-in-arm with 22 of the world’s best international players, as the teams and umpires take to the hallowed turf to commence battle in the ICC Champions Trophy final. A far cry from the village green indeed!

The International Cricket (ICC) Champions trophy is, in effect, a kind of mini world cup. The worlds best teams such as England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and India will all be competing for a place in the final match and our lucky 30 will be acting as mascots and flag-bearers during the pre-match announcements and the playing of the National Anthems.

The youngsters will also be on the pitch during the tea break, demonstrating their cricketing skills in front of a sell out crowd of maybe 25,000. And a worldwide audience of many millions will be watching them on the television!

We feel very privileged to have been selected as the lead club for this event and we are very grateful to Surrey CCC and the International Cricket Comittee for offering us this opportunity.

The important thing to note is that we were selected, in the words of the competition’s organizers, as a tribute to all the hard work that has been done by club members and villagers, at the very grass roots level, to keep Hambledon CC operating at its current level and making us ready to receive our safeguarding certificate (known as ‘Clubmark’).

For this I really feel that we should put forward the names of Arthur Blackman and Tony Strudwick for our very special thanks. They have both devoted years of their lives to the club, and to the village… As a former player, I can state that were it not for the efforts of these two gentlemen, the club would be a very different place..and Hambledon’s young cricketers would never have been given this chance to experience a day that they will surely remember for the rest of their lives. Thank you Arthur, thank you Tony, from all of us.

Let’s pray for good weather on June 18th.
