New Wooden Signs! 2 Years, 3 Months ago

Is it just me, well actually no it isn't my whole family share the same view. Why oh why did the Parish Council waste money on fixing something that wasn't actually broken. Why didn't the money go on something much more urgent, much more dangerous ......... the state of the lane! How Surrey have the audacity to call it part of the Surrey Cycle Way when it is quite clearly the most dangerous stretch of road a Cyclist could encounter, they endanger thier own lives each time they swerve to miss a pothole!! The signs were purely changed out of vanity and not safety, and even then they are not historically correct, where are the black arrows at the end of the signs (look at the Hydestile Crossroad's signs that have been there an age!).
I understand money is tight and it would be unreasonable to ask that the lane should be completely resurfaced, but why WASTE money, when it could have been better used on remedial works, I think it is about time Councillors got their priorities right and started thinking about the people who actually live in the Village and not what people outside of it think!!
I tried to give the signs a fair trial, but every day I have to put my little car through such an ordeal I just get more and more angry.

This subject has brought forward many similar points of view. The forum is the place for airing these views,so we hope there will be many others forthcoming. We can see both sides of the argument. The Parish Council have been campaigning long and hard to get action on the potholes. This responsibility lies with Surrey County Council and it is their pot that appears empty. We have all paid for this service in our Council tax.The only other way of getting action is to fill them in ourselves, but this has Health and Safety considerations. We do have a duty to look after our village. This is what we were elected for.Any person selling their house appears to boast the virtues of living in Hambledon in the sales information. This,I am sure adds value to the properties. So if an initiative is offered that helps in this direction we would be silly not to take it up.That is how it was with the wooden posts-a de-cluttering of the signs (which it has done around Lane End)-and a trial before offering to other villages. The money put towards it would not have brought about the potholes being filled. We are still trying to achieve this. This will be discussed, again,at the next Parish Council meeting on Dec.1st at 8pm in the Village Hall.Would the complainant like to come and discuss this with us,together with any ideas they might have of getting the potholes filled! P.J.U.
