Please feel free to join in and post to this Hambledon Community Forum. The more the merrier!

If you are new to Discussions Forums don't be daunted. It is quite simple. Just click on a thread to read the posts from other villagers. if you want to reply, simply click QUICK REPLY at the end of the post you wish to respond to. Type your message and click submit.

You don't need to register to post here, but if people do register it does help to manage the forum and keeps it all friendly. Registration also enables you to use extra features - such as notification of posts "subscribe". Please use a meaningful name for registration, or even if you are posting as a guest as this avoids misunderstandings and mis-attribution of posts.
Real names would be advisable.

Currently this is a moderated forum which does not require registration nor pre-checking of posts, so please do follow the normal rules of web etiquette of friendliness and civility.

GLOSSARY:

Quick reply - the simplest and best way to reply to a post.

Reply: This allows you more options, such as highlight text, quoting parts of previous posts or posting pictures.

Quote: enables you to paste the text from the post your are replying to, into your post

Edit: allows you to change what you wrote.

Print: you can print any post you see here.

Image file to attach: you can take a image from your PC and include it in your post.

Subscribe: you can nominate that you are emailed when someone replies to this thread. If you post to a forum you are automatically notified of replies. (members only)

Icon, Emoticons: one of these B)

Avatar: The image associated with your name - select in "My Profile"

Here are the detail features of the forum:

New posts can viewed all on one page if you click "View Latest Posts" at the top menu. (registered users only)

When you post to the forum you will automatically be notified by email when a response is posted
" (registered users only) This is known as "SUBSCRIBE". This can be turned off in My Profile or by checking the box as you write a post. You can also "subscribe" to ANY thread (or whole forum)- even if you haven't posted by clicking "SUBSCRIBE" at the top of that thread (see picture):

Then you are automatically notified if posts are made to all or just one or two topics. This is a potentially powerful feature - eg: such as allowing instant notification when a shop special offers are announced on the "Village Shop" thread, or when team lists are published by a cricket club. I'll leave it up to villagers to explore the opportunities.

If you want to post images in your posts then that is possible too (see below). We will also have a dedicated photo album elsewhere on the website for Village photos.

How about an AVATAR (the tiny picture adjacent to your name)to personalise your posts, and add a little information to your profile? (registered users only)

If you wish to POST PHOTOS then here is what you need to do:

1 Prepare your photo: make sure it is 600 x 600 pixels maximum, and no bigger than 500kb file size. this can be done in Microsoft Picture Manager, iPhoto, Photoshop or PhotoSuite applications on your PC.

2 Then go to Select Image to attach, and click Browse at the bottom of the compose Post window as you reply. Browse will allow you to find the image you have prepared in your PC's folder.

3 Click {img} - that will place that picture into the text of your post.

4 Click preview or submit.

result like this:

OR If you are unable to reduce the size of your photo you could host it on http://imageshack.us/

This will upload your photo to a third party host, and then supply you with a _link_ that you can paste into your Hambledon Forum post.... like this:

If you need any help getting to use these features, or you'd like an avatar to add to your profile, just contact me and I'll more than happy to help.

PS There is a printable guide to many features here:

Paul,
Firstly, and most important; the Hambledon Village (HV) website looks fantastic and very professional. The team are doing a great job. I'm sure the forum will be a useful add-on provided people use it. My problem is I have never seen one before and don't know how!
As a first-time user of an interactive site like this, I would prefer if you kept the structure as simple as possible. However I TOTALLY accept I may not be representative of the average HV site user - so I'll be interested to see if any other posts follow this one, shooting me down!
As I say, I've never seen / used a forum before, so more than anything else I need an idiots guide on the front page, before I get into a forum, explaining what they are, and how to use them. I can't work on more than 1 window at a time so it would be good to have a "Click here for a copy of these instructions in a printable format" button, which would format the guide onto one A4 sheet of 10/12 point font that I could print it off and refer to it while trying to work out how to use the buttons etc.
For example, I genuinely have no idea what the differences are between (or when is the correct time to use?) the "Quick Reply" / "Reply" / "Quote" buttons? And wow... the "Reply" button takes me to a new screen full of "stuff"; Emoticons, bbcons, topic icocs... What are they for and how should they be used etc.
Trying to keep this brief, I'll end where I started: The look and content of the site is comprehensive and professional - but my concern is that the functionality (is that the right word?!) is not intuative and as a willing but slow learner I need every user controlled aspect of the site to be 100% intuative or explained in terms a 5 year old (me!) would understand.
Thanks for all your (and the team's) hard work so far.

Hi David,

This is a fairly normal forum as forums go. Yes it has a lot of formating stuff which i too think is a bit over the top - looks too much like Microsoft Word for my liking! I'll see if I can disable some of that formatting clutter. I will write a quick guide to posting...later

Reply and quick reply - effectively the same result but Quick reply looks much better and intuitive.

I thought the avatar reflected the average windows user! Sorry - my joke.

The website is designed to be totally cross platorm. It will run as well on windows as on Macs. It might look slightly different depending on the browser you use..internet explorer, safari, firefox etc.
