The INTERNET SPEED in Hambledon 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Our internet speed is very slow(0.9) and was wondering if this is the same throughout the village... Our current speed excludes use of some technologies for home working etc and If this is the case then we have a much better case for lobbying BT..

Very slow here too Julie - only 2-3 times the speed of dialup. It also drops the connection from time to time as the signal dips. It is an infrastructure problem - although I had one surreal conversation with BT when they claimed it was because squirrels had eaten the insulation off the phone lines.

On the main Petworth Rd.but in the Parish of Hambledon,my speed is 4.5MB/sec.According to the test I seem to have the fastest of my nearest 20 neighbours. What have I done to deserve this I have to ask!

Many thanks. The Bt website has Godalming down for high speed fibre optic connection in June 2011. I will pursue this further and post any progress. It seems that the villagers with 01428 numbers get a faster service.

Re:The INTERNET SPEED in Hambledon 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I have done a lot of delving into why the broadband is poor in some areas. I live in Salt Lane and we have a flaky service, around 1.5 MBs at best. This is on ADSL2 via TalkTalk's LLU Unbundled kit in the Godalming Exchange. I have had BT engineers looking at my line and there is nothing more they can do.

The cause of problems is this:
It is a long way from the exchange. The cable runs from Godalming centre, via Secretts, Milford Railway Station and along to the Hydestile Crossroads. Much of the run from Milford is low grade Aluminium, not copper. This corrodes.

The Railway crossing has a set of very poor cables running under it. This is at maximum capacity too. It is prone to water damage and is unreliable. The natural bandwidth loss between Godalming to Milford Station, and Milford Station to Hydestile is about the same... even though the distances are radically different. This shows how poor the final mile is.

It is unlikely to be upgraded /repaired - I have tried. The better speeds of 01428 suggests their exchange is not so poorly served. I am unsure where in Hambledon the boundary is between 01483 and 01428. I have a feeling ClockBarn Lane is served via a different cable via Busbridge. Anecdotally they seem to have better bandwidth speeds.

I am sceptical of any promises of optical. Milford maybe, but I can't see BT digging in their pockets to pay for little old Hambledon.

I wonder if the EU would look favourably on rural Surrey for a broadband grant?!!!
I followed up with BT open reach about getting an 01428 number (the end of Feathercombe Lane is on this exchange) but this was difficult and did not guarantee a faster speed. In the end we have installed a satellite system. It seems to be much better (so far!) but is more expensive than BT and the dish isn't too pretty. We await the fibre optic roll out with eager anticipation!

Hi

That is interesting about the satelite option. What speeds do you get and is it reliable in poor weather? Our Talk talk bundle costs £20pm for all calls and broadband (1.5mbs at best). Is a satellite _link_ significantly more?

I have heard of rural communities providing local wireless cover from a single satellite _link_ serving a street or district.

HAMBLEDON RESIDENTS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACTIVATE THEIR VOTES FOR SUPERFAST BROADBAND FOR WORMLEY EXCHANGE "01428 68...."

BT have a website to register interest for superfast broadband of speeds of up to 40 Mb
http://www.racetoinfinity.bt.com/
Wormley only shows 40 votes out of 3004 possible SO WE NEED A VERY ACTIVE CAMPAIGN
According to the website, the closing date is midnight New Year Eve and the top 5 UK telephone exchange will be enabled
The final result may be down to the total number of users who register a vote so consider casting a vote for all your telephone lines
THE ACCESS IS VERY QUICK & SIMPLE
PLEASE FORWARD to all Wormley Exchange Users = 01428 68…. that you know !!

Hi
That is interesting. What was the previously fastest speed you had experienced? What did BT do to up your bandwidth? How did they explain you low speed? Vann lane is a long way from the exchange so 2.5 meg is impressive.

I am on the main Petworth Rd,but still 01428-and my best speed is about 4.3.However,of late it has really been slowing down, to make connection often difficult at peak times. Is the system becoming overloaded?

There is a new satellite coming online in mid April which is much cheaper and has speeds of 8 . It is designed for rural areas and we are hoping for great things!
