Oak Posts For Hambledon Road Signs - what do you think? Print

Vote in the Left Hand column on the recent changes:    Contractors have mounted essential road signs on wooden posts throughout Hambledon, in keeping with the rural character of the village.  At the same time signs regarded as superfluous have been removed as part of an initiative to "declutter" villages within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The work was carried out on behalf of Surrey County Council and follows a lead taken by Hambledon Parish Council, which contributed £1,000 to the cost of the project.

The parish council requested an improvement to the appearance of Hambledon's signage after a report in the Surrey Advertiser in November 2008 stated that efforts were to be made to reduce "creeping urbanisation" in Surrey Hills villages, first suggested as long ago as 2000.

Following a visit by Surrey Hills staff it was decided that Hambledon should be a pilot project.  Warning signs for schools and those indicating speed limits must remain by law but others, including the one carrying the absurd warning of floods on Rock Hill, will be removed.

Work started on Tuesday (September 2nd 2009) and will continue over the next few weeks.
