Campbell Feathercombe Lane 01483 860264 Area 8 Ms L Roberts Hambledon Park 01428 685075 Parish Council Representative Mr R. Vickery 01428 682036 A few words about your Neighbourhood Specialist Officer PC Sam Barnett: A Neighbourhood Specialist Officer is the closest you get to an old-fashioned beat bobby these days, and each village or parish across the county will have a Neighbourhood Specialist Officer. At the moment my 'patch' is Milford, Witley and Hambledon. My area stretches from where the new Hindhead tunnel is being built, all the way across to Hydon Heath. In the north I range from the Milford/Elstead junction of the A3 down to just above Grayswood. I take in Bowlhead Green, Tuesley Farm and Wormley. And of course, the beautiful, peaceful village of Hambledon. Mine is a large area but with a very low crime rate. The issues that seem to bother most of the residents are things like parking, speeding vehicles and antisocial behaviour (mostly of youths). Hambledon itself has suffered burglaries, particularly recently, but otherwise there is very little crime.
My role is primarily to deal with community related matters - be they parking issues, nuisance youths, or speeding issues. If an issue can or does affect the community in general (as opposed to individual victims) then I am the officer asked to look into it. In reality, I am never quite sure what I am going to be asked to do! I have chased loose cattle through Milford whilst trying to herd them back into fields, sawn down bits of tree dangling in the road, refereed slanging matches between neighbours, started pancake races, given talks to local groups about topics like drugs and personal safety, and extracted small boys from their bicycle chains. I also take statements, make arrests and interview suspects, complete court files and then go to court. I issue fixed penalty tickets, seize vehicles and separate drunken fighting 'mates' on a Saturday night. My colleagues and I make sure our communities are safe on Hallowe'en, Bonfire Night, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, and every Remembrance Sunday I will be found with the Cubs, Guides and Brownies in the parade in Milford.
And I am always on hand to offer crime prevention and security advice and if you have a query that I cannot help with, I can normally find someone who can, because I am part of the huge team that makes up Surrey Police. In this era of cost cutting and government capping of funds available to the Police, we are still committed to giving our residents the best service we can, and although we may not be seen on the streets as often as people would like (a very common complaint) we are easily accessible and more than willing to come and help.
I have been a Police Officer for ten years now, and have been a Neighbourhood Officer for the past six. Prior to the joining the Police I worked for the National Health Service and at a series of local pubs. I am originally from the Godalming area, so I know it well, but at this stage in my life, I am living just outside Portsmouth in Hampshire. I have three children – one grown up, one at school and one at pre-school. I would love to say that I have a range of exciting hobbies but I don’t – with a full time job and small children, I don’t have time! When they have all left home I will take up something interesting!
