We’re getting very excited about the production ‘Campfire’ at the village hall next Thursday, April 7th. The theatre designers are in tomorrow to measure up and are talking about backlit cutouts with flickering shadows. It sounds as if it will be a fantastic evening. Ticket numbers are limited as we are still providing some degree of distanced seating. Don’t forget to buy your tickets before they run out!

Heritage Society AGM and a presentation by Stephen Dean

The village hall committee is looking forward to the Heritage Society AGM this evening and Stephen Dean’s talk.

We are expecting attendance to be very good so will be arranging chairs differently from usual in order to create some degree of distancing. There will be a limited amount of fully distanced seats at the back of the hall.

As some of our community will be more vulnerable to Covid than others, we would like to suggest that people wear face coverings, where possible.

7:30pm for an 8pm start. All welcome. Free entry. Refreshments and light snacks. Donations appreciated.

The Village Hall is pleased to present ‘Campfire’ – the first theatrical production at the hall for over two years.

On Thursday, April 7th, performers from Farnham Maltings are returning to the village hall with their brand new production ‘Campfire’. Anyone who saw Mountain Music will know that we are in for a wonderful evening.

There will be music and poetry (which we know Hambledonians love – remembering our fantastic evening with Ian McMillan and Luke Carver-Goss) and we also have the exciting opportunity to be part of the show! Please read on for information from the team at the Maltings.

What’s Your Story?

We all have a story to tell, but it’s not always easy to talk about yourself. Sharing our stories can help us to reconnect with each other in an increasingly fractured world.

That’s why Campfire is coming to your village. Campfire is a unique, magical event which celebrates the untold stories of people who make up a community. We’re looking for people to tell true stories at the event and to come to a workshop on the afternoon of the performance to so that they’re well-equipped to contribute.

No story is too small! From mundane moments to miraculous misadventures, we want to hear it all. All you need to do is show up to our free, fun workshop. You might come with an idea of the story you could tell, but it’s totally ok if you turn up with nothing. We’ll help you find and shape your story in a warm, supportive environment. Why not come to the workshop and see what it’s all about? You’ve got nothing to lose!

I didn’t think I had any good stories to tell, but Molly gives you interesting prompts and helps you create a structure around something from your life you didn’t think was story-worthy.

It makes you realise how interesting people are.

Exceeded my expectations

We’ve already got a couple of people signed up as story-tellers but we’d love a lot more to make the performance even more of a success. Have you got an amusing or moving story to tell from your own life? Have you got fascinating tales that you remember from Hambledon’s past? Perhaps you’re not sure you have a story to tell but might like to come along to the workshop to find out? The possibilities are endless and we know there are lots of great stories out there!

The workshop is on Thursday, April 7th from 2 to 4 pm with the performance the same evening at 7.30.

It’s the return of the Village Quiz Night!!

The Village Hall Committee are very pleased to announce the long-awaited return of the Village Quiz!

It’s on Saturday, November 27th, 7.30 for 8pm.

Due to Covid restrictions we aren’t providing a meal this year so do bring your own snacks. 
Cash bar and raffle available as always!

To enable distancing between tables we are selling much fewer tickets than usual. Tickets always sell out quickly so we expect them to be gone even more quickly than usual this year.

‘Abigail’s Party’ is coming to the Village Hall

The Village Hall is very pleased, once again, to be hosting the fantastic Black Box Theatre Company – this time bringing us Mike Leigh’s iconic 1970’s comedy, Abigail’s Party.

The performance is on Saturday, November 13th at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the Village Shop and at ticketsource.co.uk (£14 for adults, £11.50 concessions and £40 for a family of four).

This is the first performance at the Hall since the start of the pandemic and, in order to maintain social distancing, we will be selling a reduced number of tickets so please do buy yours early to avoid missing out!

Invitation to all Hambledon Residents to the Village Hall AGM

The Village Hall Committee are holding their Annual General Meeting on Thursday, February 11th at 7.30pm.

Due to Covid restrictions, the meeting will not be at the hall but will be held remotely, via Zoom. All Hambledon residents are very welcome to attend. This is a change to the information given in February’s Parish Magazine article.

It’s National Village Halls’ Week!

Every year in January, ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England) who support and advise village halls, celebrate Village Halls’ Week.

This year they have invited village halls all over the country to sign their ‘Domesday Book’ by adding a photo of their hall and giving a little bit of history and telling people how they have been managing over the past year.

As the hall is currently closed we can’t, of course, hold any celebration for Village Halls’ Week this year but hope to be able to next year which will also be the hall’s 120th anniversary.

New Windows for the Village Hall

Those who read the parish magazine will already know that the Village Hall Committee have been planning on replacing all the existing single-glazed windows at the hall with double glazed ones.

This is in order to reduce heat loss to make the hall warmer, less damp and reduce our carbon footprint. We hope that it will also mean a reduction in heating expenses.

We have looked at various options and have decided that replacing them with wood-effect UPVC is best. The main consideration is the reduction in the need for upkeep in the future with UPVC. Wooden windows need repainting every few years and the committee feels that it is important to reduce annual costs as much as possible now and for future committees and Hambledon residents.

The windows will be in the same style as they currently are, which is casement for the entrance hall, store rooms and toilets and sash windows for the main hall. The kitchen window has already been replaced with UVPC and we are very pleased with that. It is now draught-free and looks almost the same as the original.

We are in the process of applying for a grant for the cost of the work.

For those who haven’t yet visited Hambledon’s online Art Fair, or who want to return to make a last-minute purchase, you still have a few days left!

We would like to thank everyone who has visited the site, John C for putting the website together but mainly, of course, the wonderful artists who have made the fair such a success with their beautiful work. We are so lucky to have such a wealth of talent in our local area.

Hambledon Dawn Chorus

It was a beautiful spring morning last Sunday for the 2020 dawn chorus walk in our gardens – although it was probably more of a sit under a blanket with a cup of tea than a walk for most of us!

People were listening around Malthouse Lane and at the Hydestile end of the village.

Between us we heard a total of 25 different birds which is about the amount we usually hear when we’re out and about.

We heard: blackbird, blackcap, blue tit, Canada geese, chaffinch, chiffchaff, collared dove, crow, cuckoo, garden warbler, goldfinch, great tit, hedge sparrow/dunnock, jackdaw, jay, magpie, pheasant, robin, rook, song thrush, sparrow hawk, tawny owl (up late!), woodpigeon, wren and great spotted woodpecker.

It was a lovely, peaceful way to spend an hour but we’ll all be very glad to be able to meet and walk together again next time.

Cuckoo Joining in the Dawn Chorus

 

It was a beautiful morning for the Hambledon Garden-Bound Dawn Chorus Walk today and the cuckoo joined us from the wood behind Malthouse Lane – he doesn’t always! Perhaps he was treating us to try to make up for our not being able to be out walking together this year.

Hambledon Dawn Chorus Walk

Usually at this time of year Julie Steele would be organising the village’s annual dawn chorus walk which always involves an early morning meeting at the shop, a walk into Hambledon Hurst and then onto the common to appreciate the wonderful variety of birdsong and to note down the different birds contributing to the music.

Unfortunately, of course, this year the walk has had to be cancelled but we have a plan so that we don’t miss out entirely!

This Saturday, May 2nd, instead of meeting at the shop, we are suggesting that we all just wander out into our gardens at 5.30am (!) and spend an hour wrapped up warmly listening to the dawn chorus. If you would like to join in then please do and jot down the names of the different birds you hear during the hour, then email your list to Ruth Canham at [email protected] and we will post the results on the village website.

For anyone not feeling very confident in telling their birds apart, the RSPB has a very helpful birdsong App where you can listen to the songs of all British birds to help with identification.
