Run by residents, this community partnership with Surrey Police and Hambledon Parish Council shows that involving local residents makes a difference to the quality and safety of Village life.
The Scheme contributes to driver re-education about the dangers of speed and raises their awareness of the impact that anti-social driving has on communities like ours and of the consequences of their actions.
How does Community Speed Watch work?
If evidence shows a significant problem, police will ask the community if they would like to set up a Speed Watch scheme, enabling the community to target vehicles at times they choose. This normally involves monitoring vehicles for up to an hour during peak traffic periods. Vehicles identified as speeding are recorded. Log sheets are forwarded to an Administrator at Surrey Police who then sends out an advisory letter to the registered keeper. If there is a persistent problem with a particular motorist, police will target the driver and take further action. Volunteers are trained on health and safety and in the administration and use of speed monitoring equipment and on managing enquiries by motorists and other members of the public.
Did You Know?
Two thirds of collisions in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less. Roads like ours! The risk of fatal injury to a pedestrian at 30mph is 7%. Between 30-40 that risk is 4.5 times more likely.

Volunteers are needed.
The current HAMBLEDON Scheme has been running since 2019. In the years since, traffic volume, (and with it the number of speeding vehicles), has grown significantly. This will doubtless continue as more development on the doorstep of the Village continues at pace.
So please, don’t just leave it to others to step forward. If you would be willing to volunteer and help us in this excellent endeavour or simply to have an exploratory conversation please contact us via the webform below:-
