Hambledon Village Shop Gets More Tech

Earlier this year the Shop got an internet upgrade and many of the customers and volunteers are taking advantage of the fast (38mbps) internet access now available. No password or login is required to use the internet service at the shop, just connect your device to the shop wi-fi when you’re in the vicinity and you’re up and running. The wi-fi extends to all the outside seating, including the new Queen’s bench.

In July the card terminal in the shop was upgraded to contactless. The more customers who use this the better, as it speeds up queue movement when the shop gets busy. Most cards now allow for contactless payment, just tap your card on the terminal when the amount has been entered into it, you’ll hear a beep confirming the payment has been made. Apple Pay is also supported so you can use your iPhone or Apple Watch to make a payment. The maximum allowed for a contactless payment is £30.

The Shop also now has it’s own web application. If you go to http://hambledonvillageshop.co.uk/hvs1 you can monitor in real time how the shop is performing via a screen of widgets. Click or tap on any of the widgets to dig deeper. The app does not work correctly on some versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, but is fine on other browsers and mobile devices.

 

 

 

And, just one more thing… The Shop is active on Social Media in various ways:

Facebook, Google and TripAdvisor all allow you to write reviews of the shop, hint, hint….

Summer Art Exhibition at The Merry Harriers

Featuring Paintings by Becky Grove – NOW until the end of August 2016

Join Becky at the pub for an evening with the artist on Thursday 4th August.

Becky currently lives in Bethnal Green, London but is originally from Hambledon and so is excited to be having her first exhibition in the pub.

Inspiration for her work comes from far and wide; a road trip from the Yukon (Canada) to the US through Montana, The Grand Tetons National Park and Nashville to name a few, The Lake of Stars festival in Malawi, her friend’s farm in Somerset, her Mum’s beautiful English country garden and cowboys!

Hambledon Cricket Club Fixtures

All the senior cricket fixtures for the season are now available in the Village web site calendar.

This Sunday the league XI host Slinfold at Hambledon Cricket Green, starting at 1.30pm.

The weather forecast is for a sunny day with a high of 24C. You’ll need an ice cream from the Village Shop.

Road Closures in Hambledon Monday 29th February to Friday 4th March

Due to work being undertaken by BT, the following road closures will be in place in Hambledon next week.

– the entire length of Lane End from its junction with the A283 to its junction with The Cricket Green

– the entire length of Malthouse Lane from its junction with The Cricket Green to its junction with Rock Hill

Work will take place between 09:30hrs and 15:30hrs. Access will be maintained (via a manned barrier) for pedestrians, emergency vehicles, residents and businesses.

Stagecoach are not aware of any disruption to the 503 bus service through Hambledon, so presumably, the bus will be allowed access via the manned barrier.

The Village Shop will be open as normal. Given the disruption they will especially appreciate your continued custom.

Quiz Night at The Village Hall

The very popular Quiz Night @ The Village hall returns.

Saturday 9th April 7.30pm

Proceeds to Hambledon Community Pavillion and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

Tickets £10 pp in advance, to include supper. (Please advise if vegetarian option required).

Teams maximum 6 people.

There will be a bar and raffle.

Hambledon Village Shop Refurbishment

shop_boardThe next stage of refurbishing the Village Shop will take place in February. There will be some disruption but most services will continue to be avaliable.

Between Monday 1st February and Monday 22nd February, some new shelving will be installed, the shop counter and Post Office counters will be relocated and new flooring will be installed. All work is planned to be completed by Monday 22nd February.

Throughout this period Newspapers will be available as normal as will bread and milk and some dried goods. The farm shop will operate as normal. The delicatessen and cafe will be operating from a catering van in the shop driveway.

During the week Monday 8th February to Sunday 14th February the Post Office will be closed for a period of 3 days while the new flooring is installed, exact days of the Post Office closure will be provided at a later date.

Jo, the shop staff and the shop volunteers will be doing everything they can to keep the shop running as close to normal as possible during this period, please reward them with your custom.

Save a Life in Hambledon

AEDMoney raised through St Peter’s Church and the Parish Council means we as a community now own 2 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

These are based at the Village Shop and in the Porch of the Church. The AED at the Village Shop is currently hanging in the stock room so is only available during shop opening hours, following the forthcoming shop refurbishment it will be stored in an external cabinet.

AEDs are simple to use but can seem intimidating. Learn how to use them and help save a life in Hambledon!

Bart’s City Life Saver is a unique Charity that teaches life saving skills to people living or working in the City of London. Hambledon will be its first rural outpost. On Sunday 7th February 2016 at 2pm they will be providing training in Hambledon to enable you to learn/refresh your life saving skills and familiarise yourself with an AED.

The training will cost £20 per person and will be held in the Village Hall.

Is Your Broadband Being Slowed Down By Your Wi-Fi?

ofcom_appIn the process of carrying out the recent Hambledon Superfast Broadband Survey, it emerged that some properties in the village are not getting the Broadband speeds that would be expected based on their location. It’s possible this is because the wiring directly to the property is not in a good condition, however, it may also be because of the quality of the Wi-Fi signal within the property.

Ofcom, the independent regulator for the UK Communications industry, has recently developed an app which runs on smartphones and tablets and allows consumers to discover the quality of their wireless internet signal – as well as offering practical steps to get the best from your connection. The app will run on your iPhone, iPad or any Android device.

Hambledon Superfast Broadband Survey – Last Chance

nosurfingsignThe survey and Expression of Interest concerning superfast broadband provision in Hambledon will only be available online for a few more days.

The survey can be accessed by clicking here, it only takes a few minutes to complete. We are particularly interested in finding out more about existing broadband speeds in the residences around Rock Hill, Church Lane, Roundals and Vann Lane.
