‘Butterfly Conservation have put together a video for people to watch during lockdown as part of the local Chiddingfold Wood White Project. This should give people an idea of things they can do to help wildlife in their own gardens, especially butterflies and moths.’

Mezze

I love the Mediterranean culture of eating together, long leisurely meals with family anecdotes and stories of life. The Spanish, Italians, Greek, Portuguese all have their way. We are always in a rush to clear plates and bustle along.
Now we have time, so much time let’s stay slow, the evenings are wonderful. I’m not a fan of BBQs , not English ones. The hunter gatherer he man, beer in one hand and lighter fuel in the other is symbolic of the British summer. But I’d much sooner enjoy a Braai or Asado. Hours spent preparing the fire and long long time cooking the poor unfortunate beast on the rack. So when our cavemen are gassing and burning let’s sit a long slow starter of Mezze, carne freda, charcuterie. OUR HERITAGE TOMATOES

Suffering long term isolation and lockdown is not so rare an imposition as you may think for residents of our area. Not too many years ago the two institutions of King George V Hospital Hydestile and Milford Hospital were home to 100’s of patients suffering from Tuberculosis.

Community Foundation for Surrey Corona Virus Response Fund reaches milestone

The generosity of local donors, businesses and the National Emergencies Trust has accumulated £1 million figure into the CFS Response Fund. This includes £326,700 from the National Emergencies Trust Coronavirus Appeal, and more than £717,000 in donations from local donors and partners.
This concerted effort has ensured the Foundation has been able to quickly award emergency funding to 122 community groups reaching more than 350,000 beneficiaries across Surrey.
Locally our own Hambledon Community Fund has played its part in this success. The Merry Harriers, Hambledon’s village pub, launched a fund which will offer up to £2,000 a month for those struggling to pay food and general provisions bills, most likely through loss of pay or employment, during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The local Village Spirit Collective, makers of Vann Lane Gin, ran a raffle in support of the Community Foundation for Surrey and raised over £1000.

Vann – a virtual tour
How important is our shop?
30 years ago there was the foresight to support the village shop – well before the concept of crowd-funded had been devised. It was such a unique story that TV’s London Tonight paid a visit. Here’s a short time warp back to a simpler time.
Stir crazy? Need a family orientated distraction?
The Hambledon Village Hall Quizes have been stopped for the forseable future but there is a way to keep your quiz brain active. How about a live quiz? Nick Heath has started running live quizes from his home in Tooting and streaming them live on YouTube. Anyone can play along and there is no need to sign up to play. If you watch on the Youtube site there is an interactive chat function. It has become a 8pm ritual for families to virtually join Nick of a Wednesday evening. You can play along with this recording of his second Quiz from a few day’s back. Or Subscribe to his channel to be notified when his next live stream is scheduled.
If you like the thought of live quizzes then there is an idea to run a Hambledon Quiz Night in similar style. The plan would be to run it live on YouTube and invite Hambledon residents to form family teams and play along live. Or maybe we could also make it North Hambledon versus South Hambledon, with a Vann faction. After each round the family scores can be tabulated via the YouTube chat function. The winners would be crowned champions of the Parish. We could entitle it “Quiz of Thrones”. If you think this would be a good event and you could muster a team then do post a comment or send me an email and I’ll work on the logistics. Paul Osborne
National Theatre plays – streamed for free

An eagle-eyed Hambledonian has suggested this might be of interest to locked down residents missing the opportunity to see theatre productions.
Watch it on youtube below.
If would like to see more free theatre online there are 3 plays from Hampstead Theatre here.
Hambledon on the BBC

William Westmore, a National Trust Volunteer at Oakhurst Cottage, sent us this link to BBC iPlayer. It is a 2014 TV programme that features Hambledon (from around 4 minutes in) and it may be of interest to Hambledonians. The painting above is a wonderful illustration of a quieter time in our village… (well maybe not as quiet as it is now)
