Norman Gravestock on Oakhurst History

With the news that Oakhurst Cottage will soon be re-opening it is perhaps timely that we can re-publish the excellent talk by Norman Gravestock – Curator of Oakhurst Cottage of the National Trust. Norman gave an illustrated talk at the Hambledon Heritage Society AGM back in 2015. The audio recording of Norman’s presentation is here, as well as a text copy. This has been added to the Heritage Society’s Hambledon Oral History Project archive.

11 years ago – a snapshot of the Village

Hambledon Village website was selected in 2012 to be archived by the UK National Archives as a good example of a community resource.  That archive is still available to view and can provide an insight into what was topical in January 2012.  It maybe no surprise to see some things don’t change – like discussion of bus services being withdrawn and the impact of the weather. You can browse the website as it was in 2012 here.

Malthouse Lane hazard

Beware – there is a significant icy patch on Malthouse Lane between St. Dominic’s entrance and the top of the drive of Malthouse Farm. This afternoon (Thursday) a vehicle has just skidded badly, damaging the brick wall and the 4×4 vehicle. Anyone on foot or driving by please take extra care while these temperatures are so low.

Hambledon Artist Open Gallery this week

Hambledon resident Julia Osborne is exhibiting her work at a pop-up gallery from this Friday at the Coal Yard Creatives site near the Merry Harriers. Julia, a former freelance illustrator, has teamed up with 7 other local artists to fill an empty unit alongside the Coal Yard Creatives. Julia is pleased to exhibit: “We thought it would be great to combine forces and fill the empty unit at the Coal Yard and co-incide with their Christmas Market event on Saturday the 10th. 25% of all proceeds from sale of the artwork will go to the cancer charity the Fountain Centre.”

The Open Gallery is everyday until 16th December, and the Coal Yard event is on Saturday 10-4pm.

Fireworks

An open letter on behalf of horse owners in Hambledon

Dear Hambledon residents,

We are writing to ask for your help ahead of Guy Fawkes night and the associated fireworks. Last year several of us were subjected to localised fireworks that caused severe distress and injury. In the worst example, an injured horse at Hydon Farm had to be repeatedly sedated by a vet and in one other, sustained a serious injury. For those of us trying to calm them and prevent injury, it was truly awful to witness.

Whilst we understand people like to celebrate, and at organised events support that, it is a very stressful time for those of us with animals, particularly horses.

Life Saving CPR training – free in November

CPR  is a life-saving medical procedure which is given to someone who is in cardiac arrest and can double the chance of survival.  It is something almost anyone can do whilst waiting for a defibrillator or an ambulance to arrive.

The village has now been offered the following dates for training sessions by local First Responders:   Wednesday 2nd November and/or Wednesday 9th November, during the evening (precise time to be confirmed).    The training is FREE – please contact Sarah Stuckey on [email protected] or Mary Grove on 01483 415815 to book your place.

First Responders – call for new volunteers

Hambledon is well served with many public access defibrillators in the village and surrounds – but there is another layer of aid that is provided by a group of trained volunteers ready to respond swiftly to medical emergencies. The First Responders. They are looking to recuit new First Responders for our area – can you help?

Could you be the neighbour your neighbours can’t live without?
In the coming months the ambulance service will be looking for caring, reliable people who are calm in an emergency and want to make a difference in their community.
Community First Responders are trained volunteers sent by South East Coast Ambulance Service to certain types of 999 calls. We provide treatment and care for patients while the ambulance is on its way.
If you would like to know more about what’s involved send us a message and we can explain the role and responsibilities.

Life Support & Defibrillator training course

Can you save someone’s life with CPR?

Ever wondered how you’d cope faced with a medical emergency – what to do first – can you do cardiac pulmonary resuscitation?
Any idea how to use a defibrillator? – now available in so many locations.
There are at least 4 available to the public just in Hambledon.  Maybe you’d like a reminder?

Another Life Support and Defibrillator training course is planned for the Autumn.
Bart’s City Life Saver Charity have visited the village several times and run a very successful session.  This time because of covid, it will be offered in two parts,
Part 1 : Theory by webinar, and Part 2, Practical, in person,  in Hambledon .

The practical will be in groups of 4, with individual ‘Annie’ resuscitation dummies.
The charge will be about £25 per person (help with cost is available – don’t let charge deter you).  The charge covers travel from London by trainers plus a donation to the Bart’s City Life Saver Charity.

Saved for Posterity – Recording of Church Bell Tolling after Death of Duke of Edinburgh

10th April 2021: The bell was rung 99 times at Hambledon Church

A recording that captures a special few moments as Hambledon Church bell tolled 99 times following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh has been kept for posterity and can be listened to on this website.

Prince Philip died, aged 99, on April 9th this year, and Hambledon observed the protocol following the passing of a senior member of the Royal Family. The parish council placed formal notification on its noticeboards and on this website and chairman John Anderson paid respects on behalf of the village.

On behalf of the church and village, George Pitt raised, then lowered, the Union Flag, according to custom, at St Peter’s.

It was announced that church bells would toll at noon the following day. Derek Miller undertook this and, as the Union Jack fluttered in a gentle breeze, the solitary bell chimed out across the countryside surrounding the church.

The flag remained at half mast until the morning after the Duke’s funeral at Windsor Castle on April 17th.

A recording of part of this ceremonial occasion can be found by following the link above. For the news story published at the time, please follow this link https://www.hambledonsurrey.co.uk/?p=14686

Hambledon open again!

The Lane End gas road works have now progressed and the road is now open. Friday 19th.

The parish council has been advised that three-way traffic lights will be in operation at the junction of Lane End, Malthouse Lane and Vann Lane to allow engineers to complete installing new gas mains to the entrance of St Dominic’s School. It is hoped that this work will be concluded by Wednesday March 31st and the temporary lights will remain in use until then. Engineers will return at a later date to complete the connection up to the school buildings.

Oil & Gas at Dunsfold refused – twice.

Yesterday an important decision was made (for a second time) on the proposals for oil and gas wells in Dunsfold… and maybe the potential to come West towards Hambledon. Thank-you to the multi-talented campaign team that made it happen. Press Article

You can see the meeting webstream here – the campaigners’ presentation is at 12m 40s. https://surreycc.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/515802

Lost dog – Hydons Ball

Friday Night 14th
Our sweet, miniature dachshund, Ferdy, (nearly 2 years old) went missing (Tuesday evening 10th November) from behind the fields, Goffers, London Rd, North Chapel, West Sussex, GU28
There were 2 sightings on Thursday 12th at 8.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. on the footpaths between Hambledon Church of St Peter and St Paul, up to Hydon’s Ball, Surrey.
He might be going towards Godstone, Surrey, as he lived there previously.
He’s dark blond, and looks a lot like an autumn leaf, so blends in well to the countryside 😢
Any help would be much appreciated,
Susi Barran
