Volunteers needed for Oakhurst Cottage

Oakhurst Cottage – National Trust

We are currently recruiting for Oakhurst Cottage guides to join our friendly team of volunteers. Help us to tell the story of this historic cottage and give engaging tours to visitors from all over the world. This is a brilliant opportunity to make friends and learn all about a cottage with a history spanning over 400 years. We’re open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons between April and October and we ask that you are available at least once a fortnight to lend a hand. Applications are now open  and we look forward to hearing from you.

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via [email protected]/

Heritage Research Bursary

The Hambledon Heritage Society was established to ensure OUR VILLAGE heritage is understood, documented and appreciated by current and future generations.

Many village residents have supported the aims of the Society, with important contributions such as the compilation of the village scrapbook, publication of booklets and articles plus of course the popular speaker’s presentations at the Annual General Meeting, with topics ranging from dendrochronology, WWll memories through to famous residents and associated village houses.

The Society continues with its programme of research activities but is now wishing to encourage, new, interested Researchers to add to this programme, by offering two, Heritage Research Bursaries of £100.00 each for 2017-2018.

These Bursaries are designed primarily to attract young Researchers, who are in full or part time education, are normally Hambledon residents or progeny of current residents and are interested in conducting village heritage research, selecting a topic of their choice. However, research has no age limitations.

Examples of such topics could be; glass manufacturing, the workhouse, why a two-centred village?, the lime kiln and its uses etc. but new and innovative topics would be welcome.

To apply for one of the research Bursaries or just to make an enquiry, please write to or call Stephen Maycock, a member of the Hambledon Heritage Society committee who will be pleased to discuss the Bursary programme in more detail.

[email protected]  or 01428-682230.

For further information regarding the Hambledon Heritage Society and its activities please contact, Ross Kilsby,  Chairman, 01428-685622.

New community venture -The Garden House

We would like to update you on progress at The Garden House in Hydestile.  We have been developing the project for around 4 years and the estate is now looking very different.  For those of you who pass by on Hambledon Road, you may have noticed a large pond and new planting.  We are now better placed to spread the word about the project and would like to let people know what it is that we are doing.   We would like to invite you to think about how The Garden House estate can be used by either you or people that you may know who could benefit from the resource that we are creating.Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 13.06.22 Continue reading →

BT Openreach have booked roadworks that will close Salt Lane between 9.30am and 3.30pm from 9th January for 5 days.

We don’t know what works they are doing (it has nothing to do with the new community financed cabinets) and whether the road will actually be closed or temporary obstructions, but you should assume it will be closed.  The diversion should direct you via Clockbarn Lane.

Additionally:

Markwick Lane will be closed the following week 17th-19th January. The diversions will be a much greater detour.

Help raise funds for your Village Hall through EasyFundraising

Screen Shot 2016-11-02 at 16.01.37Here is a great new way for everyone in Hambledon to help raise funds for the Village Hall. Did you know that whenever you buy anything online – from your weekly shop to your annual holiday – you could be collecting free donations for Hambledon Village Hall through ‘Easyfundraising‘? There are over 3,000 shops and sites on board ready to make a donation, including Amazon, John Lewis, Waitrose, Boden, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s and it won’t cost you a penny extra!

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…

Go to https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/hambledonvillagehallsurrey/ and join for free.

Save the site to your ‘favourites’ or download the ‘reminder’ which will then pop up every time you visit the site of a participating shop.

Every time you shop online, go to Easyfundraising first, type in the name of the shop or site you want and start shopping.

It really is just one extra click of a button to raise money for the village hall.  After you’ve checked out, that retailer will make a donation to the Village Hall Fund (generally between and 1 and 5% of the amount you have just spent) for no extra cost whatsoever! A large amount of charities and other good causes are signed up to Easyfundraising. Easyfundraising itself is not a charity but a profit-making organisation. It makes its money from payments from the retailers which support them. Their website states that they don’t take any financial information from people using them to shop as all transactions will be with the retailer not Easyfundraising. They also state that they will not sell any user’s information on. There are no extra charges when you shop via Easyfundraising and Hambledon Village Hall would be extremely grateful for your donations. Please contact Ruth Canham at [email protected] if you have any questions.
