Celebrating 80 years of Citizens Advice…

Jane Woolley is responding to Citizens Advice’s challenge to walk 10 miles to celebrate its 80th birthday and she would like your support. Her last challenge was a half marathon to celebrate her 80th birthday, which raised over £3,000 for improvements to Hambledon Village Shop.  This one is for an equally worthwhile cause.

As a past Citizens Advice advisor, Jane is very aware of the huge range of practical advice and support which the charity can provide for people from every sector of the community. It covers a range of problems that most of us don’t realise exist – until, whatever our circumstances, we suddenly come face to face with them and don’t know where to turn for help.   That’s when Citizens Advice can make all the difference – either by pointing people in the right direction to help themselves or by putting them in touch with those who have the relevant professional expertise to provide the guidance that, hopefully, will lead to a successful resolution of the problem.

So please sponsor Jane. A pound a mile would be fantastic; anything more would be even better!  If you are lucky you will never be a beneficiary of your generosity but, if you aren’t, the fact that Citizens Advice is just around the corner could help you turn a potential disaster into a solvable problem.

You can donate on-line here , or you can put your contribution (either cash or a cheque, payable to Citizens Advice Waverley) in an envelope with the accompanying form and hand it in at the shop counter.

Thank you very much.

Parish Magazine Pays Tribute To Two “Great Lives” in July Edition

The families of Mic Coleman and Pat Williams have expressed their gratitude to the people of Hambledon following the funerals of both, held in the past month.

They were much loved and respected residents and both contributed enormously to life in the village.

Mic’s funeral was held at Guildford Crematorium, followed by a gathering at the Merry Harriers. In a message afterwards, his family said: “We would like to thank all those who attended the service at the crematorium and those who sent condolences and thoughtful messages”

Pat’s funeral was held in Hambledon at St Peter’s Church and her sister Margaret Romney said that the love and friendship in the village had been “overwhelming”.

The lives of both have been celebrated in earlier articles on this website. The July edition of the Parish Magazine carries the tributes paid to both at their funerals. It will be on sale at the village shop from tomorrow (Saturday June 29th).

New Associate Minister for St Peter’s

The Rector, The Rev. Simon Taylor, who is also now Area Dean, is delighted to announce that after a careful and prayer-filled interview process the Associate Minister post has been offered to and accepted by The Rev. Simon Willetts. Simon is currently Associate Minister at ChristChurch, Virginia Water. He and his wife, Naomi, will be moving into Mervil Bottom in the summer. He will be formally licensed and welcomed at a special service at St Peter’s on Sunday 15 September 2019 at 6pm with a reception afterwards at Clock Barn. We are obliged to point out that the appointment remains subject to clear DBS, medicals and paperwork.

This appointment would not have been possible without the overwhelming generosity and support of all those in our village community who responded to the fundraising campaign. At the recent Annual Church Meeting the Treasurer, Andrew Dunn, was delighted to announce that we hit the pledge target. If anyone would like to discuss their pledge, or if anyone has any questions about church finance, they should feel free to contact Andrew on 01428 482 113 or by email at [email protected].

The Hambledon Dawn Chorus

On Sunday 5 May at 5 am, eight of us met at Hambledon Village Shop, by which time the dawn chorus was well underway. We crossed the Green and went into the Hurst, then back across the Green and up onto the Common.

In all we heard 18 different species of birds:  robin, blackbird, song thrush, wood pigeon, blue tit, great tit, collared dove, jackdaw, blackcap, pheasant, Canada goose, chaffinch, wren, chiff chaff,  tawny owl, mallard, carrion crow, rook.

We didn’t hear a cuckoo during the two hours we were listening at this particular time, but like some other birds it has already been heard in the village.  This is just a record of what we heard at this time.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS – AND A SPECIAL HAMBLEDONIAN 90th BIRTHDAY

Hambledon residents  turned out in large numbers at noon on Christmas Eve to join in the community singing of carols and seasonal songs outside the village shop.

A big thank-you goes to the organisers, the shop choir and to David Kirby and his musician friends for a wonderful and harmonious festive gathering.

The day before, Mic Coleman, who for so many years has been a stalwart of village activities, celebrated his 90th birthday. He and Sylvia had a busy day as friends dropped by to pass on their best wishes before a large family gathering later in the day. Mic has worked tirelessly for the village football and cricket teams, becoming president of both. He has been involved in the running of the village hall, the village fete and the produce show. He is also a former chairman of Hambledon Parish Council.

In 2012 he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honors “for services to sport and the community in Hambledon”. Mic has done so much for the good of the village and its residents and we all wish him the very best for the future.

And the Web Team sign off by sending its best wishes to all.

VILLAGE HALL QUIZ – A GREAT NIGHT OUT

(Please also see news item below this, posted by Hambledon Village Hall Committee)

A packed Village Hall saw residents and friends pit their brains against each other as 14 tables, comprising 84 participants took part in a fund-raising quiz on Saturday (November 17th).

Thanks go to the Village Hall Committee and its team of volunteers who organised the evening, staffed a well-stocked bar, cooked and served home-made cottage pie and rounded-up an impressive selection of donated prizes for a raffle.

What was particularly rewarding was the cross section of villagers, old, young and everything in between, who took part and made the evening a great success. They included people from all aspects of life in Hambledon; the shop and its volunteers, Merry Harriers pub regulars, its Bridge team, the church, the cricket and football teams and, of course the Village Hall itself.

The questions were well set and divided into 10 themed rounds. The winning team,” Here, There and Everywhere”, comprised Christine and Ron Baker, Duncan Watson, Charlotte Gray, Mary Burrows and Stewart Payne.

However, it was a close-run contest and several teams just missed out on the top spot, having answered a few more questions correctly but not used their “multiplier” as effectively.

All profits from the evening go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall, which has recently been undergoing an extensive refurbishment with new chairs and curtains.
