Can You Help Hambledon Keep its Vicar? – Public Meeting April 11th, 7.30pm, Village Hall, All Welcome
Many people place great value on having a church and a vicar in our little village. For some, it is because they are regular worshipers, others maybe attend on special religious occasions such as celebrating Christmas or Easter. Some simply enjoy visiting St Peter’s in its beautiful rural setting on top of a hill overlooking the village, a place for quiet reflection. Others are glad that it is there for family weddings, Christenings and funerals.
And many appreciate its Ministry to the village, maybe in times of need, illness or bereavement and having a vicar living in the village to be a familiar and welcoming friend.
For all of these reasons, and more, the church and its outreach is important, whether you are a regular member of the congregation or not.
In modern times however, none of this can be taken for granted. Even small churches are expensive to maintain, as a building and as a ministry. Hambledon is no exception. Several years ago, local residents responded magnificently when its became clear there was a real risk that services could be curtailed and a resident vicar no longer afforable.
Some gave one-off donations, others set up standing orders or other methods of making regular contributions to safeguard the future of St Peter’s. Over the years some of those generous people are no longer with us or have moved away.
As many will know, Hambledon is in need of a new associate minister to be our village vicar. The stark warning is that recruitment cannot begin unless new fundraising takes place. A meeting is to be held at the Village Hall on Thursday April 11, starting at 7.30pm, when the Church will outline all the issues it faces and invite residents to consider if they can help financially.

On Saturday April 27th we will be showing ‘The Holdovers’ which has just been nominated for five Oscars and one of its stars (Da’Vine Joy Randolph ) won the Oscar for best supporting actress.
It tells the bittersweet story of a cantankerous teacher at an American boys boarding school who has to oversee the students left at school over the Christmas holidays and the relationships which develop.
Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30.

Last chance to purchase Early Bird tickets for Jazz On The Green
Sunday 31st March is the final day of sales of early bird tickets for Jazz On The Green to be held on Friday 21st June.
Adult Early Bird tickets are £18 each, Under 18’s/Student tickets are £10 and Under 16’s come free (but you’ll need to register a ticket for them).

Oakhurst Cottage Re-Opens for New Season
Oakhurst Cottage, the National Trust-owned labourer’s cottage beside the Cricket Green is opening to visitors for the 2024 season. This can only happen with the support of local volunteers, mainly from the immediate Hambledon area, who show pre-booked visitors around the property.
Villager Camilla Edmiston co-ordinates this activity. She writes:
“One visitor wrote about their tour of Oakhurst Cottage as ‘This utterly delightful old labourer’s cottage, dating back to the early 17th century, is indeed a rare find, and can rightly be described as unique, in that it remains largely unmodernised within, despite centuries of habitation.’
If you have never experienced a guided tour of Oakhurst then now is your opportunity to book and see for yourself, as the cottage will be open for the new season from Monday 1st April. For 2024, Oakhurst Cottage will be open in the afternoon on Thursdays, Saturdays and Bank Holidays.
Hambledon Community Fund Newsletter Spring 2024
Over the last year Hambledon Community Fund has awarded 5 grants totalling over £7,500 to village projects. Do you recall the HP Herald crash of 1958?
On a quiet Saturday afternoon in August 1958 the Hambledon cricket team were assembled on the Green. Their play was interrupted by the noise of an aircraft very low overhead. Arthur Blackman looked up to see an airliner on fire with flames engulfing the starboard wing. The aircraft was only one minute away from disaster.
Seconds later a couple of residents of Hydestile saw the aircraft approaching, at 1000ft, heading West. Paul Vacher recalls it vividly and recounted how he saw the starboard engine fall off the wing and plummet towards the ground – estimating that it came down in the fields to the North West of Hydestile crossroads.
Hambledon Easter Events
Please take a look at the Easter page on godalmingminster.org for everything happening at St Peter’s Hambledon, and across Godalming Minster over Easter. As well as observing Easter with reverence, there’s several more inclusive and social ways for everyone to get involved.
Highlights at Hambledon include An Hour at the cross at from 12-1pm on Good Friday, before the trekkers arrive from Busbridge for tea and hot cross buns at the end of the Hot Cross Bun Adventure. If you want to join them, please meet at Godalming Minster Brighton Road at 2.30pm.
Messy Easter on Sat 30th is a real treat for younger ones. Meet at the Village Hall at 10am for a walk up to Hambledon Common where there’ll be games and an egg hunt on the sandpit.
Then come along to church at 10am on Easter Day to celebrate Jesus is Risen!
There’s no morning service on 7th April, but do please join us for the Spring Choral Evensong at 6pm (with thanks in advance to the very accomplished pop-up choir!).
Multipliers at the ready – it’s Village Hall Quiz Time!
The Spring Quiz at the village hall is on Saturday, April 13th at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, hosted by our usual fantastic quizmaster, Bill Dann.
There will be a raffle with great prizes and a bar taking cash or card payments with a selection of wines, beers, soft drinks and snacks.
Please note that we won’t be providing supper this time and this is reflected in the reduced price of the tickets.
Tickets are £10 each available at the shop from Tuesday, March 19th. Teams of up to six people only, please.

Heritage Society Talk 2024
King George V Hospital and St. Thomas’ Hospital History
Here is a recording of the illustrated talk at this year’s Hambledon Heritage Society AGM.

Rock Hill UPDATE – ROAD OPEN
An update to yesterday’s new item below…Hambledon Road reopened at around 4pm this afternoon (Thursday March 14th).
It had been closed for several days at Rock Hill. Thames Water work, which had been delayed, was completed today. The road closure signs have been removed and a member of the workforce told the parish council that no further work is required and the road will remain open.
- Remember, if you are reading this on the day of this update being posted, it is the Hambledon Heritage Society annual meeting at the village hall tonight, 7.30 for 8pm start, and all are welcome to hear an illustrated talk given by parish resident Paul Osborne on the fascinating history of the King George V and St Thomas’s Hospitals at Hydestile.
((Original news item) Hambledon Road remains closed at Rock Hill between the Merry Harriers and Church Lane, despite a Thames Water information board stating it would reopen today (Wednesday March 13th).
The road is impassable to vehicles, with a trench across part of the road and a parked digger. No workers were on site for a second day and no activity taking place. Pedestrians and cyclists can get through.
The pub and the nursery school can be accessed, but only from the Godalming/Hydestile direction.
The Parish Council is attempting to get an explanation from Thames Water for the delay and confirmation of when the road will reopen.
The photo below was taken at 3.30pm this afternoon, showing the closure but no Thames Water staff on site.

Starring Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham-Carter, Lena Olin and Johnny Flynn, ‘One Life’ tells the true story of Nicholas Winton, a young English broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued over 600 children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.

Hambledon Cricket Club Race Night Fundraiser – Friday 22nd March
The (virtual!) Race Night at the village hall is fast approaching!
You can still reserve a table for 6,8 or 10 people and tickets are £5pp which must be purchased in advance. Please contact Caroline ([email protected]) as soon as possible if you’d like attend.
With the first race at 7:30pm, it promises to be a fun evening and (possibly!) a chance to take home some winnings!
There will be pizza available to purchase and a bar, and the money raised from the evening will be going towards Hambledon Cricket Club.
