Hambledon Village Shop – Update Sunday 19 July 2020

The Shop operating hours are about to become a bit simpler.

From Monday 20 July the Shop will be open 08:30 to 14:00 7 days a week, deli service will be available 08:30-13:30.

The Post Office will continue to be open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 09:30 to 12:30.

Deliveries will be now be available Monday through Friday with orders placed by 10am delivered the same day. We love having your business and we encourage you to place orders – don’t think you’re creating unwanted work for us!

These changes provide a bit more consistency and also should allow us to create a safer environment in the shop which allows us to get additional volunteers and professional staff back working in the shop.

In August the Shop will be participating in the Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Under this scheme we will offer a 50% discount, up to a maximum of £10 per person, to all customers who eat and/or drink at our picnic tables throughout August on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. And that’s why we have bunting….

Contrary to popular rumour, the bunting has not been put up to celebrate a birthday this Thursday, it’s really there to allow us to clearly explain to customers how to eat on our premises, given that in August we do not plan to have seating in the shop or on the terrace. Anyone ordering food or drink for consumption on the shop benches inside the bunting will qualify for the Eat Out to Help Out discount.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Friday 3 July 2020

Progress sometimes seems slow, but progress is being made. From Saturday 4th July customers can consume food and drink at the shop’s picnic tables.

The tables have been given some tender loving care and placed suitably distanced from each other on as level ground as can be found. Tim Coleman did a fine job of manicuring the grass. Thanks to all who helped with the tables today, we all agreed it is a lovely spot to sit, next to the pond, looking out on the Cricket Green, some in the sun, some in the shade, we’ve probably all taken it for granted in the past.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Monday 22nd June

The Shop was open this last Saturday and Sunday mornings for the first time in a while. From now on the shop will be welcoming customers 7 days a week. But please come in the morning.

From now on, until further notice, the shop will be providing a walk-up service for take-away deli and groceries throughout the week up until 12:30pm. Unfortunately you will still not be able to enter the shop, all requests should be made from outside the front of the shop and paid for by card or contactless device.

For the next week (22nd to 26th June) we’ll be providing deliveries Monday through Friday, from the week beginning 29th June we’ll be doing deliveries on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. We plan to continue providing a delivery service so long as there is demand for it, but may reduce further the number of days on which it is available. As before, delivery orders place before 11am will be delivered the same day.

Newspaper deliveries will continue until the end of this month. From July 1st newspapers should be collected from the Shop.

The Post Office will continue to be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 09:30 to 12:30.

We hope that on the 4th July we will be able to restore the outside seating to the Shop. We will not be providing seating on the shop terrace but the picnic benches will be available.

The forecast for the next week is good, please come and see us, though you can’t come in the shop, we are lucky enough to have a large outdoor space in front of the shop with plenty of space for people to mingle at a distance and chat. The shop has always loved a bit of gossip and always will.

Bank Holiday Weekend Shop Delivery Schedule

Please note that the shop will be delivering as usual this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Because of the way the shop roster works, we’d actually prefer if you could place your orders on Bank Holiday Friday, in preference to Thursday or Saturday, if at all possible. If you’ve already placed an order for Thursday there’s no need to change it.

As usual, we’ll attempt to deliver all orders received before 12 noon on the same day.

Many thanks.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Monday 13th April

“The Shop must be doing well” is often the cry from villagers I meet on my daily walk. Well we hope so, but in these strange times, how do we measure the success of the shop?

I can, and will, bore you with statistics on the shop business but, most importantly, every delivery we do to those isolating and every time we prevent an unnecessary trip from home is a success for the shop.

If you’d like more data on the shop keep reading.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Thursday 9th April

It’s amazing how quickly the unusual can become the norm. Just a few weeks ago we were welcoming all to the shop, for a natter, a coffee, a paper, a fishing license and even some to do a bit of shopping. Dogs got free biscuits; now we find ourselves occasionally barking at people to keep their distance as they approach the shop, for our safety and theirs. But we’re all adapting.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Saturday 28th March

Today was our busiest day so far for orders. Almost 50 were provisioned. Thanks to all involved. Please note there will be no deliveries tomorrow (Sunday) apart from newspapers. We will be delivering again on Monday.

The shop remains well stocked with all the essentials. You can find out more about what the shop stocks by downloading this document: HVS Groceries.

The process for placing orders for delivery is as follows:

  • place your order by email to [email protected]. Only call us if you must, the shop number is 01428 682176
  • orders received before 12 noon will be delivered same day
  • include your address and phone number with your order
  • whilst we understand you may not know our prices, we would ask that you attempt to place an order with a minimum value of £10
  • DON’T COME TO THE SHOP

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Thursday 26th March

Thanks, once again, goes to the team who provisioned today’s orders, around 30 orders were processed and delivered. The Shop continues to be well stocked (we’ll even have grapes tomorrow….). By using the shop delivery service you can avoid making unnecessary trips and help ease the burden on the food supply chain. The more that food demand is spread across a wide network the better. It avoids congestion in food outlets and buys some time for everyone involved to adjust their processes.

Advice from Waverley Environmental Heath

The shop has received excellent advice from Waverley Environmental Health on what process and procedures need to be put in place in the current environment. They believe the shop should be doing everything possible to stay open and serve the needs of the community. The shop is well placed to do this safely, given that it already has in place food hygiene procedures required of an establishment providing takeaway and on-site food consumption. The shop has been advised to continue to adhere strictly to good food hygiene practices even though on-site and takeaway food is no longer being provided. Additional practices have also been advised and are being followed.

A Contactless Delivery Service

In line with the advice we’ve received, the shop has implemented a contactless delivery service. Orders are taken by email (we will take calls, but remember that if you call us those in the shop have to use a shared phone), deliveries are made with no contact between the deliverer and the customer, payments are made by a card transaction over the phone (with outgoing calls we can make sure the person using the phone is using their own phone). The email address to use is [email protected].

If we stick to this process, we can maintain a contactless delivery service and also help reduce unnecessary trips. We do not want anyone to visit the shop unless they are requested to. You may be able to collect your own shopping but we would prefer that you didn’t. We are not currently struggling with deliveries.

Volunteering

This being Hambledon, we have not been short of offers to help, they are much appreciated. Our strategy, at the moment, is to provision the shop delivery service with a small group of individuals and minimise the contact between that group and others. Each member of the group has a specific role which helps maintain social distance between the team members and avoid shared contact surfaces. Should one member of the group show symptoms of infection, it is likely all of the group would need to self-isolate. At that stage we will need a new team. So while we may not be contacting you now for help, we may need to in the future, for now we would prefer you stay safe and are therefore available when we need you.

Serving the Vulnerable

We have had some calls from those in vulnerable groups who have been unable to get deliveries from elsewhere. We are more than happy to help them out if they live within a reasonable distance. If you are aware of people in this situation, please put them in touch with the shop or get in touch on their behalf. The supermarkets are inevitably taking some time to provide on-line deliveries in a timely fashion. We can help fill the gap.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Tuesday 24th March

With immediate effect the Shop will be providing a delivery service only. The Post Office will be closed until further notice.

Only staff and volunteers provisioning the delivery service should visit the shop.

Orders for delivery should be sent to [email protected], only if entirely necessary, orders can be called through on 01428 682176. Orders for same day delivery must be made by 11am.

We have a number of orders already placed, they will be delivered, you should not try to collect.

Payments for orders will be by card transaction over the telephone after the order has been placed and delivered.

We will be delivering newspapers to those that have a pre-existing standing order with the shop.
