A well-attended and entertaining village Assembly provided an opportunity to welcome the newly-appointed parish council clerk Catherine Russell and an endorsement to further challenge an unwelcome outcome to the Waverley Borough Ward Boundaries review.

Celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – Here’s How in Hambledon

Mary Grove, on behalf of Hambledon Parish Council and a team of volunteers from around the village, are working on arrangements for commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

Buckingham Palace announced a four-day Bank Holiday for the beginning of June to mark the event, the first time that a British monarch has reached this platinum milestone. Special celebrations will be taking place across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Here Mary gives the latest developments for our village festivities.

Hambledon’s celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee are taking shape!  On Thursday 2nd June we hope to have a torch-lit procession and beacon, courtesy of Peter and Kim Cross and on their land at the top of Bryony Hill – more details later.   On the Saturday there will be open gardens to explore, kindly organised by Caroline Pitt and Andrew Falk. A flower festival will take place in the Church, organised by Mary Parker.

On Sunday 5th June, in line with national plans, a BIG LUNCH STREET PARTY  is planned for the afternoon on Malthouse Lane, which we have permission to be closed for the day.  George Pitt is planning two Treasure Hunts, walking and cycling, and Jane Woolley is producing a brochure depicting previous Hambledon Royal celebrations and a programme outlining the 2022 activities, which we hope to sell for charity.

Tables will be available to book and decorate, and participants are invited to bring their own lunch and drinks. Hopefully there will be music and singing to add to the day. The Village Hall facilities will be available.

All are very welcome to join the party, and details of table bookings will be available after our next planning meeting on 5th May, at 8pm at The Merry Harriers).

Annual Parish Assembly Tomorrow – Important Changes to be Imposed on Hambledon

Important – and unwelcome – changes are planned for the way Hambledon is represented by our Waverley Borough ward councillors. This will have an impact on all villagers. If you would like to hear more please come along to the Annual Parish Assembly at the Village Hall tomorrow evening.

Your Parish Council, which hosts the event, has objected to a Boundary Commission review which proposes removing Hambledon from shared representation with neighbouring Witley and Milford, and placing us with Bramley and Wonersh, despite objection from Hambledon Parish Council.

The council, in the consultation period, put forward a robust case to remain with Witley as it is there that its residents go for many services not available in our small, rural village, including schools, surgeries and shops. This was ignored and the outcome was not even one we were originally consulted on.

Our MP and village resident, Jeremy Hunt, has offered his support in our campaign to overturn this decision, which requires Parliamentary approval. This issue – and other issues affecting Hambledon – will be covered in the council’s chairman’s report tomorrow night.

Please come along for light refreshments at 7.30. The meeting starts at 8pm and will include short reports from all of the village’s many activities and organisations, including the community shop, church, nursery school, cricket and football clubs, almshouses, pub and village hall.

Copies of the Agenda and other documents will be available on a shared basis in the hall. But if you would like to see the Agenda and current financial statement, these can be found on the Parish Council page of this website in the document library. https://www.hambledonsurrey.co.uk/?page_id=160

Hambledon Cricket Club – Come and Hear About exciting new developments for the 2022 season

The village cricket club has new state-of-the-art nets, soon to be installed, and a full season of friendly games. The nets will considerably enhance the club’s facilities, placing it among the best in the area. It also has a lovely ground, in a beautiful setting, and a community village shop selling tasty treats on its doorstep.

Please come along to the clubhouse on Saturday May 7th for a social get-together and to hear more about what lies ahead.

Club Chairman, Nigel Tristem, gives more details below.

This is to let you know that we’ll be hosting a “One Club” Day on the cricket green on Saturday 7 May from 11.45am to 2pm which will provide a great environment for existing players and members to renew old acquaintance and find out more about what the new season will bring. There will be free burgers on offer and the bar will be open! Continue reading →

Bin Collections – Expect delays

Residents across the borough may have experienced delays to their waste collections. Please see the following notification from Waverley Council, and follow the link provided for more information.

Waverley Borough Council’s waste contractor, like many others around the country, is still dealing with challenges arising from COVID-19 absences and also continuing HGV driver shortages. The council is therefore warning residents to expect further bin delays over the coming weeks.

The council would like to remind residents that if their bin has not been collected to please leave it out and Biffa will collect it as soon as possible. Read more on our website here 👉 https://orlo.uk/iPx5H

We would like to thank you all for your continued patience and support.

Rock Hill Closure on Monday April 4

Hambledon Parish Council has been advised that Surrey Highways engineers are returning to Rock Hill to further investigate the long-term water leak, and this may result in the road being closed for parts of the day.

Although the flow of surface water has been much reduced there is further work required to unblock a drainage pipe under the road, involving the use of root cutting equipment.

Surrey Highways maintenance officer Steve Lindsey-Clark said: “We have a road closure scheduled for Monday 4th April. We have one section of pipe opposite the nursery school that needs root cutting equipment. We couldn’t do this on our last visit due to the width of the road and this is the first opportunity to carry out this work without conflicting with other road works in the area. This will resolve the problem.”

Access to the nursery school and the Merry Harriers will have to be from the Hydestile end of the village during any closure. The closure is expected to involve just the steep, narrow section of the road between the pub and Church Lane.

Hambledon Ukraine Appeal – An Update

The Hambledon Ukraine Appeal has now raised more than £6,000, thanks to the outstanding efforts of villagers who have responded with such generosity.

A JustGiving page set up on March 7 in response to the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine has received donations in excess of £4,500. Another £1,000 has been raised on the card reader at the Village Shop and cash has been collected in boxes at various locations, including the pub, football club and nursery school, as well as on the shop counter. The Merry Harriers alone raised around £600 from a quiz and collection box.

Hambledon Football: Champions

Hambledon Football: Champions

Hambledon Reserves claimed the SCILW Premier Reserves Title on Saturday with a resounding 6-0 win over Surrey University. With three games to still to play the Dons sit 17 points clear of nearest rivals Wrecclesham. A fantastic achievement with not many remaining from our title winning side last season. With numerous players making the step up to the first team and a few moving away. The Reserves have been largely made up of players over 35. Still plenty of legs left in the old boys.

Many thanks to our Vets team who also stepped up to help when player shortage hit – Ben Bewsey, Rob Green and Paul Cook in particular. A run of 16 straight wins put the Dons in a great position before the first points were dropped against Guildford United in a 2-2 draw before suffering their first and only defeat of the season away to Wrecclesham. Before they regrouped to go on another unbeaten run. With three games left the Dons will be hoping to conintue their fine form.

Congrats to Matt Kiley, Carlo Moriano and the team on retaining the title.
