‘Campfire’ at the Village Hall this Thursday at 7.30pm

Don’t forget to buy your tickets for this performance from Farnham Maltings at the village hall on Thursday. 

It will be a wonderful evening of music, poetry and stories by the flickering light of the (artificial!) campfire in the warmth of the village hall. Hot chocolate will be provided and there will be a cash bar.

Come along for a great evening and to support your story-telling neighbours!

There might be the opportunity for some impromptu music and story-telling from the audience so feel free to bring your guitar!

Bin Collections – Expect delays

 
Residents across the borough may have experienced delays to their waste collections. Please see the following notification from Waverley Council, and follow the link provided for more information.
 
Waverley Borough Council’s waste contractor, like many others around the country, is still dealing with challenges arising from COVID-19 absences and also continuing HGV driver shortages. The council is therefore warning residents to expect further bin delays over the coming weeks.

Rock Hill Closure on Monday April 4

Hambledon Parish Council has been advised that Surrey Highways engineers are returning to Rock Hill to further investigate the long-term water leak, and this may result in the road being closed for parts of the day.

Although the flow of surface water has been much reduced there is further work required to unblock a drainage pipe under the road, involving the use of root cutting equipment.

Surrey Highways maintenance officer Steve Lindsey-Clark said: “We have a road closure scheduled for Monday 4th April. We have one section of pipe opposite the nursery school that needs root cutting equipment. We couldn’t do this on our last visit due to the width of the road and this is the first opportunity to carry out this work without conflicting with other road works in the area. This will resolve the problem.”

Access to the nursery school and the Merry Harriers will have to be from the Hydestile end of the village during any closure. The closure is expected to involve just the steep, narrow section of the road between the pub and Church Lane.

Hambledon Ukraine Appeal – An Update

The Hambledon Ukraine Appeal has now raised more than £6,000, thanks to the outstanding efforts of villagers who have responded with such generosity.

A JustGiving page set up on March 7 in response to the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine has received donations in excess of £4,500. Another £1,000 has been raised on the card reader at the Village Shop and cash has been collected in boxes at various locations, including the pub, football club and nursery school, as well as on the shop counter. The Merry Harriers alone raised around £600 from a quiz and collection box.

Hambledon Football: Champions

Hambledon Reserves claimed the SCILW Premier Reserves Title on Saturday with a resounding 6-0 win over Surrey University. With three games to still to play the Dons sit 17 points clear of nearest rivals Wrecclesham. A fantastic achievement with not many remaining from our title winning side last season. With numerous players making the step up to the first team and a few moving away. The Reserves have been largely made up of players over 35. Still plenty of legs left in the old boys.

Many thanks to our Vets team who also stepped up to help when player shortage hit – Ben Bewsey, Rob Green and Paul Cook in particular. A run of 16 straight wins put the Dons in a great position before the first points were dropped against Guildford United in a 2-2 draw before suffering their first and only defeat of the season away to Wrecclesham. Before they regrouped to go on another unbeaten run.With three games left the Dons will be hoping to conintue their fine form.

Congrats to Matt Kiley, Carlo Moriano and the team on retaining the title.

We’re getting very excited about the production ‘Campfire’ at the village hall next Thursday, April 7th. The theatre designers are in tomorrow to measure up and are talking about backlit cutouts with flickering shadows. It sounds as if it will be a fantastic evening. Ticket numbers are limited as we are still providing some degree of distanced seating. Don’t forget to buy your tickets before they run out!

Parish Assembly 2022 – All Welcome

The annual Parish Assembly will be held at the Village Hall on Thursday April 21st, and all are welcome to come along to hear from our local clubs, organisations and activities as they review the last 12 months.

Whether you are involved in one or more of the many community ventures, or simply want to be updated on life in our village, this is the ideal opportunity. It is an informal occasion, starting with refreshments and the chance to mingle with friends and neighbours at 7.30, followed by short briefings from representatives starting at 8pm.

Tickets now available for Jazz On The Green

As part of the long awaited Hambledon Midsummer Festival, on the evening of Friday 17th June the Junction 4 Big Band will once again be playing on the Cricket Green. Many people bought tickets for this event two years ago. If you chose to roll over those tickets then they remain valid for this event and you will have received a confirmation email in the last few days. 

Some tickets remain for this event and they are now on sale at hambledonfestival.co.uk. Adult tickets are £15 and under 16’s tickets are free. The event starts at 6pm.

Heritage Society AGM and a presentation by Stephen Dean

The village hall committee is looking forward to the Heritage Society AGM this evening and Stephen Dean’s talk.

We are expecting attendance to be very good so will be arranging chairs differently from usual in order to create some degree of distancing. There will be a limited amount of fully distanced seats at the back of the hall.

As some of our community will be more vulnerable to Covid than others, we would like to suggest that people wear face coverings, where possible.

7:30pm for an 8pm start. All welcome. Free entry. Refreshments and light snacks. Donations appreciated.

Last Chance to Apply to be Hambledon Parish Council Clerk

The closing date for applications for the vacant position of Hambledon Parish Council Clerk is this coming Friday, March 18th.

This is a part-time, salaried, position. The Clerk works alongside the seven elected parish councillors and undertakes a role that is crucial to the operation of the council and is an important function in our community.

A New Clerk For Hambledon – Could it be You?

The Village Hall is pleased to present ‘Campfire’ – the first theatrical production at the hall for over two years.

On Thursday, April 7th, performers from Farnham Maltings are returning to the village hall with their brand new production ‘Campfire’. Anyone who saw Mountain Music will know that we are in for a wonderful evening.

There will be music and poetry (which we know Hambledonians love – remembering our fantastic evening with Ian McMillan and Luke Carver-Goss) and we also have the exciting opportunity to be part of the show! Please read on for information from the team at the Maltings.

What’s Your Story?

We all have a story to tell, but it’s not always easy to talk about yourself. Sharing our stories can help us to reconnect with each other in an increasingly fractured world.

That’s why Campfire is coming to your village. Campfire is a unique, magical event which celebrates the untold stories of people who make up a community. We’re looking for people to tell true stories at the event and to come to a workshop on the afternoon of the performance to so that they’re well-equipped to contribute.

No story is too small! From mundane moments to miraculous misadventures, we want to hear it all. All you need to do is show up to our free, fun workshop. You might come with an idea of the story you could tell, but it’s totally ok if you turn up with nothing. We’ll help you find and shape your story in a warm, supportive environment. Why not come to the workshop and see what it’s all about? You’ve got nothing to lose!

I didn’t think I had any good stories to tell, but Molly gives you interesting prompts and helps you create a structure around something from your life you didn’t think was story-worthy.

It makes you realise how interesting people are.

Exceeded my expectations

We’ve already got a couple of people signed up as story-tellers but we’d love a lot more to make the performance even more of a success. Have you got an amusing or moving story to tell from your own life? Have you got fascinating tales that you remember from Hambledon’s past? Perhaps you’re not sure you have a story to tell but might like to come along to the workshop to find out? The possibilities are endless and we know there are lots of great stories out there!

The workshop is on Thursday, April 7th from 2 to 4 pm with the performance the same evening at 7.30.

Hambledon Heritage Society – Winton Dean’s Memories of Hambledon

The Hambledon Heritage Society AGM will take place at the Village Hall on Wednesday 16th March 2022, 7:30pm for an 8pm start. 

Stephen Dean will give an illustrated talk: “Winton Dean’s Memories of Hambledon”, based on his articles in the Parish Magazine, with additional material.

Merry Harriers Quiz Raises £500-plus for Hambledon Ukraine Appeal.

A quiz in aid of the newly-established Hambledon Ukraine Appeal raised a remarkable £539.50, thanks to the generosity of a packed pub-full of contestants from the village and beyond.

Hosted by quiz-master Andy Hinde and music-master Jon Petersen, the event was a sell-out. The pub dished out curry and a free drink for a knock-down price and donated two bottles of champagne to the winning team. This enabled the entrance fee, together with generous cash and card donations, to go entirely to the Hambledon Ukraine Appeal.

Prayer Vigil for Ukraine – Thu 10 March

A prayer vigil for Ukraine is being held tonight Thursday 10.3.22 at St. Peter’s Church, Hambledon from 19:30 – 20:15

All are welcome to come and spend the time praying together, focusing on different aspects of the crisis. The prayers will be guided by Rev Simon Willetts, with time to pray and reflect individually.  Hambledon church is open from 9am-5am for prayer and reflection. Feel free to come in, be still and write or say a prayer.  A printed booklet of prayers for Ukraine are available to take away.

Rally for Ukraine 12 noon this Saturday at the Godalming Bandstand

All members of the local communities are invited to show solidarity with Ukraine this Saturday 12th March at 12 noon at the Godalming bandstand in Phillips Memorial Park.

All political parties and local churches are coming together at this time, with speakers including Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Councillor Paul Follows (Lib Dem), Nick Palmer (Labour) and other local dignitaries. Godalming Rotary will be collecting for the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.  Prayers will be led by Rev Simon Taylor, Rector of Busbridge&Hambledon Church.
