Hambledon Moves Into Tier 2 Covid Restrictions – What It Means Around the Village

Hambledon moves back into a tiered system of restrictions from today (Wed Dec 2nd) as the latest Covid-19 lock-down ends and the village shop, church and pub adapt to new guidance.

Waverley Borough, in common with most others in the region, will be in Tier 2 until at least December 16th, when a review is expected.  This has tougher measures than the Tier 1 that it was in before the last lock-down, but does allow for some relaxation.

From today the village shop and post office has increased its trading hours, and is open seven days a week, from 8.30am until 2pm. Online shopping continues Monday to Friday for local home delivery. Personal shopping remains as before, with customers not allowed inside the shop but with staff taking orders from outside. Payment is by card only.

Oil & Gas at Dunsfold refused – twice.

Yesterday an important decision was made (for a second time) on the proposals for oil and gas wells in Dunsfold… and maybe the potential to come West towards Hambledon. Thank-you to the multi-talented campaign team that made it happen. Press Article

You can see the meeting webstream here – the campaigners’ presentation is at 12m 40s. https://surreycc.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/515802

Website “Sunday Reflections”

The popular “Sunday Reflections” village website feature – a gentle observation of life in Hambledon when under the Spring and Summer Coronavirus “Lock-Down” – has reached a wider audience, thanks to local MP and village resident Jeremy Hunt.

Jeremy provides a twice-weekly email update to subscribers across his South West Surrey constituency and beyond, reaching into the heart of Westminster where he is chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee.

During the current pandemic his experience as a former Health Secretary and party leadership contender has been widely called upon, both by the media and by his Parliamentary colleagues.

He has kept in touch with Hambledon Parish Council and the village website and readily agreed to contribute a foreword when it was decided to produce a printed version of the Sunday Reflections to record for posterity how our community faced up to the challenges of the pandemic.

Help Make Hambledon Sparkle This Christmas

The Church is asking for help from across the village to decorate roadside gardens, trees and verges with stars or in the theme of a Christmas carol.

In addition, it is planned to create a walking trail from the village shop to St Peter’s Church along footpaths decorated in the Christmas theme. Then, on the morning of Christmas Eve, villagers can follow the path for two nativity services at the church.

More details and information on how to enlist as a volunteer can be found on the two posters reproduced below. And, at the end of this article, please see some words from Jacqui Rook, pastoral assistant at the village church. Continue reading →

Lost dog – Hydons Ball

Friday Night 14th
Our sweet, miniature dachshund, Ferdy, (nearly 2 years old) went missing (Tuesday evening 10th November) from behind the fields, Goffers, London Rd, North Chapel, West Sussex, GU28
There were 2 sightings on Thursday 12th at 8.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. on the footpaths between Hambledon Church of St Peter and St Paul, up to Hydon’s Ball, Surrey.
He might be going towards Godstone, Surrey, as he lived there previously.
He’s dark blond, and looks a lot like an autumn leaf, so blends in well to the countryside 😢
Any help would be much appreciated,
Susi Barran

Parish Council Vacancy – Deadline Tomorrow

The deadline for applications for the casual vacancy on Hambledon Parish Council is 6pm tomorrow (Friday November 13th).

The procedure for filling the vacancy – which has arisen following the decision by Mike Parry to retire after almost ten years as a parish councillor – was posted on this website two weeks ago. This allowed for a period of ten working days for anyone to express their interest and then provide a 300-word submission.

Only those who have completed this process by 6pm tomorrow will be considered by the parish council at its next meeting in December.

Please follow this link for more details. https://www.hambledonsurrey.co.uk/?p=13931#more-13931

Waverley Grants to Local Businesses Hit by Lock-Down

The following may be of interest small businesses in and around Hambledon. More details are available on the Waverley Borough Council website, and on its social media feeds.

Businesses that provide services in person to customers can now apply for the Local Restrictions Support Grant.

Businesses will be eligible if they provide services in person to customers from their premises, are required to close due to the government’s national lockdown from 5th November until 2nd December and  have a Business Rates account.

Waverley Borough Council staff have once again been redeployed to focus resources on making the software and operational changes required to process the grant claims from local businesses.

Under the scheme, businesses can receive between £1,334 and £3,000 for the 28 days. Further information and an application form is available at www.waverley.gov.uk/lrsgrant.

Parish Magazine Goes Cashless

Hambledon Parish Magazine has traditionally been paid for in cash, usually left in a box at the village shop.

But times have changed, and the Coronavirus pandemic has drastically altered the shop’s operation. We are currently in another lock-down and the future shop procedures cannot be predicted with any certainty.

The exchange of cash for products and services has declined and the magazine’s editors have had to think seriously about alternative methods of payment.

First, the good news:  the price of the magazine will remain unchanged in 2021.  That means 70p per copy and £7.50 for an annual subscription (plus £18.00 if you want your magazine posted to you).

When lock-down was introduced last March, a successful appeal for additional deliverers meant that, from then on, the monthly magazine was hand-delivered (or, in a very few cases, posted) to every subscriber.

Additional copies, plus a cash box, will remain available in the Church and at the Village Shop for those who need to purchase a one-off copy. But all regular readers are asked to pay up-front.

First of all, please consider if you could pay your subscription on-line.   This applies to all current subscribers and anyone else who would like to take out a subscription for 2021.  Payment details are as follows:

Sort Code 60-09-04, Account no. 62028499, Account Name Hambledon Parish Magazine.

Reference: your full name please.

For those of you who do not wish to use online banking, please make out a cheque for £7.50 (plus the cost of postage, see above, if applicable) payable to Hambledon Parish Magazine.  Put your cheque into an envelope with your full name/address/telephone number on it and leave it at Hambledon Village Shop (ask for it to be put into the Parish Magazine tin under the till counter).  If you are self-isolating and need your cheque collected, please telephone magazine co-editor Jane Woolley on 01428 684213.

Please take these steps now to ensure your magazine arrives at your doorstep next year.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update Thursday 5 November 2020

As we enter another lockdown there will be some changes to the way the shop operates.

The two most impactful changes for customers are the suspension of the shop’s Eat-In Deli service and the shop’s closure at weekends.

From Thursday 5th November 2020:

  1. The Post Office will operate 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, 09:30-12:30.
  2. The shop will operate 5 days a week Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 13:00.
  3. We will continue to offer a free delivery service 5 days a week, Monday to Friday with a cut-off of 10am for same-day deliveries. The shop’s product list and more information on how the delivery service operates can be found by clicking here.
  4. We will offer a Personal Shopper service to walk-up customers 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, 08:30-13:00. We will pick and bag your shopping list while you wait and take payment by card outside.
  5. The shop will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
  6. We will operate a reduced Take-Away Deli service 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, with cut-off for made-to-order food at 12:30
  7. There will be no Eat-In Deli service and customers will not be able to use the shop’s picnic tables.

We hope that by operating in this way we will help to:

  • Keep people in their homes as much as possible
  • Minimise the number of unnecessary journeys
  • Minimise the number of interactions between different households
  • Minimise the duration of interactions between different households

Thank you for your patience and continued support of Hambledon Village Shop.

Lock-Down 2 – What is Happening in Hambledon

As Hambledon enters a second lock-down, here is a round-up of how the village and its various organisations will keep services going within the restrictions enforced across England from today  (November 5th, 2020).

There are a number of key differences – nationally and locally – from the first lock-down, which began in March and lasted for much of the summer months. It is planned that this lock-down will last for one month only, ending on December 2nd, and more businesses and activities can continue.

Hambledon Parish Council Seeks to Co-Opt New Member

Applications are invited to fill a vacancy that has occurred on Hambledon Parish Council.

Mike Parry, a parish councillor since 2011, announced his retirement last month and the resulting vacancy was formally notified to the Electoral Services Department at Waverley Borough Council. It then published a notice of the vacancy and of a 14 working day period during which 10 or more parish electors could request that it be filled by holding an election.

No request was received when the deadline expired at the end of last week. As a consequence, the parish council can now co-opt a suitable candidate to fill what is called a “casual vacancy”.

How to Buy Your Remembrance Poppy

This year, in common with just about everything else, responding to Poppy Day is going to be difficult.  No house-to-house collections are allowed; no-one can wave a tray of poppies at you until you put some money into a tin.  So we are going to be dependent on trays and collection boxes at a few static collection points across the village – and on people having some actual cash in their pockets! – or online giving.
