Traffic chaos coming: 1st Sept to Oct 3rd

Cala Homes currently building 200 homes at “Enton Meadows” (not meadows, not in Enton) have scheduled a closure of Station Lane in Milford. This is for electricity and gas roadworks. It will be traffic lights all day and then at 6pm closure til 5 am. The official diversion booked and agreed with Surrey CC is via Hambledon. This will divert vehicles that normally use Station Lane to the A281 and through Malthouse Lane and Hydestile Crossroads. This will include HGVs (despite the 7.5t restriction on all roads) and the 25 or more artics that deliver produce to the Tuesley Farm fruit packing/distribution hub. Tuesley Farm has HGVs movements upto 10pm routinely.

There is also closure of Woodlands 16-17th Sept.

I predict chaos, stoicism and a terse letter in bold font to our County Councillors.

It would seem more logical to devise a better diversion route avoiding the single file lanes. How about from Milford to Godalming and turn on Brighton Road B2130 to Hascombe and East that way? Going Westwards they could divert at Loxhill and take the reverse route to Godalming and then A3.

Footnote: In the longer term this roadworks closure will be repeated when Cala Homes will revise the alignment of Station Lane. I anticipate this will require at least a month of closure. Cala are currently trying to re-negotiate the planning condition to delay doing this until after they have completed 50 homes. In short the road re-alignment will move Station Lane to the South (that’s why the trees were downed) to permit a wider pavement on the North side. This wider pavement will also extend over the old Ock Bridge. The bridge is not going to be widened so the road will be narrowed to single file. This will then need a “One way shuttle” scheme to alternate traffic over the bridge – with a priority from the Milford side. Other works include widening the approaches to the mini roundabout to increase capacity. However capacity will be reduced by a series of yellow hatched boxes, speed humps, pedestrian crossings and traffic calming. All in all, when complete, these works will amount to a reduction in capacity for the road and increased congestion at all the junctions.

Saturday, 8th August – Hambledon Cinema presents – Woodstock

For three remarkable days of mud and happiness in 1969, over half a million people came together on a small farm in upstate New York to celebrate life, love and music – Woodstock

One camera crew was there, in the middle of everything, recording the live performances of many of the greatest musicians of the era and the joy, peace and rock’n’roll experience. Including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, Keith Moon, Sly Stone, Carlos Santana and many more.

This is a 3 hour blockbuster so there will be two intervals and we will start half an hour earlier than usual. Doors open at 6.30pm and the film starts at 7pm. Certificate 15

WHAT A FEW WEEKS IT HAS BEEN!

HAMBLEDON ROCKED, IT ROLLED, IT REMEMBERED AND IT RESPECTED.

It all started on the Thursday before the Festival Weekend (June 19th, 20th and 21st) when Jane Woolley’s many village friends gathered to remember her contribution to our village by joining in her 90th Birthday celebration on the Cricket Green.

It continued the following day with a large crowd gathered to hear two fine bands performing at Jazz on The Green, heralding the start of the Hambledon Festival.

On the Saturday Hambledon’s ever-popular traditional village fete took place, with a large variety of stands, stalls, displays and the dog show, always a star attraction for young and old.

In the evening the Ball in the marquee was a big success with every table taken by villagers, family and friends to eat, party, and enjoy dancing until midnight to live music, supplemented by a beer bar operated by the Merry Harriers. It rocked! (photo galleries)

Surrey Open Studios – final weekend

Hambledon is taking part in the annual Open Studios Event this year. Across Surrey there are over 140 studios opening their doors for the final weekend – 20th and 21st.

Spread across the whole county the Studios are grouped into Trails to follow. In the South group there are trails covering the Surrey Sussex Borders. If you pop into the Number 15 Gallery in the Coalyard on Hambledon Road you can pick up a brochure and plan your visits – visit the SAOS website to see the artists, locations and opening times. At Number 15, Julia Osborne now has price reductions on original paintings.
