Proceeds from the Festival help fund the various village organisations that help make the village such a vibrant place. Two important fund raising activities are the Grand Draw at the Fete and the Auction at the Summer Ball. If you are able to offer prizes for either we’d be very grateful.

As part of the village’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations a number of beautiful gardens in the village will be open to visitors on Saturday, 4 June from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.
12 garden owners in the village have agreed to open their gardens (no charge).

Two people who have given considerable public service to Hambledon over many years have died in the past few weeks – Anthony Wieler, 84, from Feathercombe, died on April 8th and Jenny Sewell, 81, formerly of Rock Hill, died on April 19th.
Both served as Hambledon Parish Councillors – Anthony from 1965 until 1976, becoming chairman in 1966, and Jenny from 1983 until 1995.
Jenny’s funeral will take place at Guildford Crematorium on Friday May 13th at 2.15pm.
There has already been a private funeral service for Anthony, but all are welcome at a Memorial Service at St Peter’s Church, Hambledon on Friday May 20th at 2.30pm.

This Sunday the 8th of May marks Hambledon Cricket Club’s first match of the season; at home against Bramley from 2pm. The club extends a warm welcome to all to come down to the green for a relaxed afternoon of village cricket confident in the knowledge that there’ll be a well-stocked bar in the club house.
The Village Shop will be open until 2pm so why not pop in before the match to stock up on essential picnic supplies before what looks to be a warm Sunday afternoon. For anyone who is looking for more information about Hambledon Cricket Club or who wants to become a playing or social member please email [email protected] and don’t forget our open day and BBQ this Saturday from 11:45 to 2pm.
Hambledon Cricket Club (HCC) could speak long about their close history with cricket: the first record being a ladies match in July 1745 when Hambledon beat Bramley by 127 “notches” to 119, or the fact that HCC has been an ever present part of the village and its life from the late 19th Century to date.
However that could perhaps date us!
What hasn’t changed however is our ethos of being a friendly yet competitive community club, open to all comers and upholding the best traditions of village cricket. We are lucky to be able to enjoy a safe, quiet and idyllic green, held on trust for the village to play cricket on.
Continue readingCatherine Russell, Hambledon Parish Council’s newly-appointed Clerk, started in her job this week.
Those who attended the annual Parish Assembly last week at the Village Hall had the chance to meet and chat with her before her formal start date on May 1st.
She will attend her first monthly council meeting on May 10th, which is something of a baptism of fire as it is the AGM. Catherine, who has not been a clerk before, will take the chair at the start, as chairman and vice chairman must stand down for a vote on whether they are to be re-elected.
It is also the meeting at which the council has to make its annual financial return to be approved by an external auditor, and review its policies on such matters as standing orders, financial regulations and code of conduct. The Merry Harriers is planning a busy summer. Events planned for May are as follows:
Sunday 8th May: Jazz Jam Live in the Garden – Local Jazz musicians and followers are warmly invited to join a Jam session in the Garden. Playing from 3-5pm – Enjoy a guaranteed relaxed and fun afternoon. Hopefully in the sunshine.
Tuesday 24th May: The Merry Pub Quiz – Curry & A Pint. Starts at 8:00 pm. Our Great Pub Quiz, hosted by Jon Petersen and Andy Hinde – £1 per entry per person. (Proceeds to The Ukraine Appeal). Guaranteed to be a fun night. Curry and a pint £15 (optional). Tables up to six team members, please call the pub on 01428 682883 to book a table.
Saturday 28th May: Outside Family Cinema & Cocktails – Mama Mia. Starts at 8:30 pm. Free outdoor cinema evening in the garden with a 20ft screen and inflatable chairs. Please book.
A well-attended and entertaining village Assembly provided an opportunity to welcome the newly-appointed parish council clerk Catherine Russell and an endorsement to further challenge an unwelcome outcome to the Waverley Borough Ward Boundaries review.

Continue readingOur next village quiz is on Saturday, May 7th at the Village Hall – 7.30 for 8pm. Don’t forget to get your tickets for another evening of knowledge-testing and fun!
We won’t be providing a meal but there will be the usual cash bar and snacks to buy. There will be a raffle with proceeds going to the Disaster Emergencies Appeal which is supporting Ukraine. Ticket proceeds to the village hall.
Tickets are £10 each from the village shop. The maximum number on a team is 6 and individual tickets can also be bought.
In order to continue to provide some degree of social distancing we are having a slightly reduced number of tables so book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!
Midweek match at Badger Park where the Reserves will be presented with their league trophy for winning the SCILW Prem Reserve Division.
This Wednesday 27th April come and enjoy a match at Badger Park and cheer on our League winning Reserve team.
The Clubhouse will be open during and after the game. Kick off is 18:30pm.

Come On You Dons
Important – and unwelcome – changes are planned for the way Hambledon is represented by our Waverley Borough ward councillors. This will have an impact on all villagers. If you would like to hear more please come along to the Annual Parish Assembly at the Village Hall tomorrow evening.
Your Parish Council, which hosts the event, has objected to a Boundary Commission review which proposes removing Hambledon from shared representation with neighbouring Witley and Milford, and placing us with Bramley and Wonersh, despite objection from Hambledon Parish Council.
The council, in the consultation period, put forward a robust case to remain with Witley as it is there that its residents go for many services not available in our small, rural village, including schools, surgeries and shops. This was ignored and the outcome was not even one we were originally consulted on.
Our MP and village resident, Jeremy Hunt, has offered his support in our campaign to overturn this decision, which requires Parliamentary approval. This issue – and other issues affecting Hambledon – will be covered in the council’s chairman’s report tomorrow night.
Please come along for light refreshments at 7.30. The meeting starts at 8pm and will include short reports from all of the village’s many activities and organisations, including the community shop, church, nursery school, cricket and football clubs, almshouses, pub and village hall.

The village cricket club has new state-of-the-art nets, soon to be installed, and a full season of friendly games. The nets will considerably enhance the club’s facilities, placing it among the best in the area. It also has a lovely ground, in a beautiful setting, and a community village shop selling tasty treats on its doorstep.
Please come along to the clubhouse on Saturday May 7th for a social get-together and to hear more about what lies ahead.

The annual Parish Assembly takes place later this month at the Village Hall, an opportunity to hear how our various village organisations and activities have fared during the past 12 months.
It is hosted by the parish council and all villagers are welcome to attend this social event, join in with drinks and refreshments at the start, and then listen to brief reports regarding all aspects of community life in our small but busy village.
It takes place on Thursday April 21st, starting at 7.30 for convivial chats with neighbours and friends over a glass of wine or soft drinks, with the meeting itself commencing at 8pm.

Two days later, on Saturday April 23rd, you are encouraged to join in our annual litter-pick around the village. This starts outside the village shop from 9am, where litter gathering equipment is available, returning at noon for a barbecue hosted by the parish council. More details on this will follow soon.
The performance ‘Campfire’ is tonight at the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Come along for an evening of music and true-life stories from some of Hambledon’s finest round an ‘artificial’ campfire with a mug of cocoa or a glass of wine/beer! Don’t risk the disappointment of missing out and then having to hear how fantastic it was!
We have some tickets left at £10 each,which can be bought on the door.
