30 years ago there was the foresight to support the village shop – well before the concept of crowd-funded had been devised. It was such a unique story that TV’s London Tonight paid a visit. Here’s a short time warp back to a simpler time.

Training offered in Hambledon for use of life-saving defibrillators
Training in the use of defibrillators (AEDs) is being offered to residents following the installation of one inside the former telephone kiosk at the Hydestile Crossroads.
This takes the number of defibrillators in the village area to five; outside the village shop, on the exterior wall of the Merry Harriers, at St Peter’s Church, at Hambledon Football Club’s ground at Badger Park, and now at Hydestile.
Alison Martin, a Busbridge Parish councillor who helped arrange for the AED (automated external defibrillator) to be installed in the traditional red kiosk – which has also undergone renovation in the process – has arranged for a training session to be held in the meeting room at St Peter’s Church, Church Lane, Hambledon, on Saturday September 28th.

The training will be given by an expert from the London-based Barts City Life Saver organisation, a charity that teaches life saving skills and originated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital. The session begins at 11am with basic life saving training, then AED training at 2pm followed by baby and child resuscitation at 3pm. Participants can opt to attend the whole session, or part.
AED’s are used on people suffering from sudden cardiac arrest and, along with Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, can greatly increase survival rates.
Training will be free to the Hydestile volunteers on the Busbridge Parish Council-sponsored rota, but to all others there will be a nominal cost of £20 per person to cover the costs of the trainer travelling to and from London and a donation to the charity’s work.
Anyone in the village can register to attend. Please contact Alison Martin at email [email protected] or by phone on 01483 893619.

Change at Hambledon Village Shop

At the end of this month (January) Gill will be stepping down as Shop Manager.
The reason is simply that Gill feels it’s time for a change of pace in her life but would like to convey that her commitment to the Shop and village life remains as strong as ever.
Although we will be sorry to lose Gill in her current position, we are very pleased that she will continue to be seen working in the shop at the Post Office counter and as one of our highly valued volunteers without whom our Village shop would not survive let alone thrive!
We are extremely grateful for the continued and incredible support given to the shop by its volunteers, shareholders, paid staff and customers, thank you!!
We are fortunate to have an expanding core of experienced volunteers and a strong professional team which together will provide continuity through this change.
Both Martin, in his continuing role as Assistant Manager, and Gill have made it clear that they are keen to support whoever maybe appointed to the Manager role and make the handover as smooth as possible.
We would like to thank Gill for her contribution over the past three years and for her continuing commitment and professionalism in supporting the Village and Shop Management Committee through this change.
We will be seeking to fill the Manager role and will be advertising the opportunity locally.
If you are a community minded person interested in applying for the vacancy, please write or email in the first instance:

Hambledon Village Shop Management Committee
A Personal Message from Gill
I’d like to say a few words following the announcement from the Management Committee today.
As you will have read, I’m hanging up my pinny at the end of this month.
Managing our wonderful big-little Shop has been a fantastic experience; hugely challenging and fulfilling in equal measure.
Although Hambledon doesn’t have a centre as such, the Shop is most definitely its heart. It is a magnet for villagers and visitors alike who may come for bread, newspapers, coffee and lunch but they receive much more than that. I feel very privileged to have been the guardian of the Hambledon warm welcome that awaits anyone who treads a path to our village door.
I’m stepping down simply because I’d like a change of pace and to have time to do other things. I’m going to continue working on the Post Office counter and as a volunteer so I’m afraid you haven’t seen the last of me.
I think this is really good timing for the Shop, too. Things are going well, we have a dedicated and well-trained team of volunteers and professionals, lots of well-oiled systems and processes, a strong Management Committee and a highly capable and kind Assistant Manager in Martin. This firm foundation will give the next Manager the breathing space they need to establish themselves.
Martin and I are committed to supporting the new Manager and providing as much continuity as possible. So, with such a lot of goodwill and positivity behind them, I hope that the next person will enjoy the role as much as I have.
Goodwill is something I have received in abundance and I am so grateful for that. It’s been fantastic to work in the heart of our community and get to know you. Thank you a thousand times for all the support, kindness and appreciation you have shown me over the past three years.
Change can be uncomfortable but when you’ve been in business as long as the Shop, it is inevitable. I was fortunate enough to meet the originators last year, Denis and Brenda Jones. It was Denis who galvanised the village into action and re-opened the Shop as a community-run venture in 1992. On their visit they were delighted that the Shop was not only still going, but thriving. I am certain that this will continue and 26 years from now I fully expect to see the little Hambledonians who are currently spending their pocket money on five penny chews, swapping their weekday career hats for the barista’s apron for a few hours each month.
The Shop is more than the sum of its parts and the thing that makes it so is the warmth, dedication and sheer hard work of so many villagers.
Long may it continue!
With very best wishes and immense gratitude,
Gill.
Join the Village Shop Choir for Carols on Christmas Eve
Once again this year, the Hambledon Village Shop Choir will be leading a carol singalong at the Shop at noon on Christmas Eve. Everyone’s invited to come along, join in with the singing and enjoy mulled wine and mince pies.
The choir will have a bigger band to accompany them this year under David Kirby’s fine leadership, so we’d love to add some new choir members. The first choir practice will be at Hambledon Village Hall this evening (Thursday 13th December) at 8:30pm, a second practice will take place on Monday 17th December at 7:30pm. If you would like to join in please come along to one or both of the practices.
Hambledon Village Shop beat Hambledon Cricket Club, at Cricket…
It was a lovely day: sun shining but not so much as to fry the fielders or blind the batsmen. The two teams turned up and immediately it was clear who were the more professional: not only did the Hambledon Village Shop XI knock the sartorial spots off with the most elegantly tailored team shirts, but also they gathered, just like the Fijian rugby team, in a tight morale-boosting and shoulder-hugging huddle to listen to a passionate Captain’s passionate words of encouragement, inspiration and oppo-bashing. Fired up and feeling fearsome, the HVS XI won the toss and opted to bat. Bottles of beer were opened in celebration: perhaps a little early, but the Dutch courage argument seemed to hold sway.
At this point the Hambledon Friendly XI, who, above all, were friendly, gently pointed out that there appeared to be 13 players in the HVS XI. Expressing surprise, the HVS XI entered negotiations. After some diplomatic to-ing and fro-ing, agreement was reached: all 13 should be allowed to bat, if needed, in the allotted 30 overs, but only 11 would be allowed to field when the time came (if only Brexit negotiations could be handled with such courtesy and confidence).
Hambledon Village Shop – Change of Weekend Opening Hours
Starting from Saturday 19th August, the shop will close at 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays with last orders for brunch at 1pm.

Hambledon Village Shop – Update May 2017
This is an amended version of the shop article in May’s Parish Magazine
Let Me Take You Down
There’s something very satisfying about sourcing produce form within a few miles of the shop. Berries from local Tuesley Farm’s strawberry fields are now available at the shop at weekends. Hambledon based Crumby Bakery continue to delight with their creations (current personal favourites are the Lemon Drizzle Bakewell and the Cheese Scones). And you can’t get more local than the homemade sausage rolls, made in the shop and which have developed something of a local cult following (if you want one get to the shop before mid-day, they always sell out).

We also now stock wine made just six miles from the shop at Blackdown Ridge Winery. The winery’s first vines were planted in 2010 and the first wines were made in 2013. Their still white wine, “Chiaro”, is made from the Bacchus grape variety, ideally suited to the cool English climate, and won a bronze award in the 2015 International Decanter Awards. The red wine, “Carmine”, is made from the Triomphe grape variety, it has a bright, mid-cherry colour, with ripe cherry aromas and hints of spice and roasted red peppers.
Trading Update
A combination of good weather, bank holidays, cricket, film crews and blood sweat and tears resulted in a busy April with net sales of just over £26,000, this took the sales for the shop’s first quarter to £71,000 an increase of 40% over the same quarter last year (during which the shop refurb took place). At time of writing, it looks like net sales in May will be the highest monthly sales in the shops history and might just hit the £30,000 mark. Many thanks to all who provide blood, sweat, tears and custom.
New Investments
The Shop’s healthy coffers have allowed for a few equipment upgrades. A new microwave and a commercial grade toastie maker are in place and a new commercial dishwasher is on the way. All will help to improve productivity in the cafe/deli, which now makes up 40% of the shop turnover. Hopefully there will also be a few less chafed hands in the village.
Good progress continues on the shop toilet, watch this space for news on the grand christening. Suggestions on a postcard please for which local personality should be the first to make their mark. Also, this month has seen the construction of an eco friendly child’s play area and a rustic bike rack.
Wines of the Month
June’s wines of the month will be a white and once again a rosé (in May the rosé wine of the month sold out halfway through the month, so we’re going to keep riding that pony).
The white is the Chateau Saint Cyrgues Blanc (£7.60), recently said by Forbes magazine to be one of the best white wines under $20. This Costieres de Nimes Blanc is a blend of Roussanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc and is unoaked. A lemon-yellow in colour. Scents of rose petals, honeycomb, candied lemon and white pepper. Medium-bodied on the palate with notes of honey and sweet spice leading to a lingering and spicy finish.
The rosé this month is the De Martino Estate Cinsault Rosé (£9.80). The grapes are from vines grown in the cool climate area of Itata in the south of Chile and this dry and refreshing Provence style pink is packed with fresh summer red-berry flavours and makes for a great aperitif or accompaniment to fish and seafood. A delicate salmon pink in colour. Aromas of plums and strawberries. The palate is dry and intense with notes of cherry and raspberry leading to a refreshing finish. Make sure you have a spare in the fridge as the first one won’t last long.
