Hambledon Village Shop Manager
The Management Committee of the Hambledon Village Shop Ltd is looking for a dynamic Manager to lead the team of staff and volunteers. The Shop, Café and Post Office have grown in popularity under the previous manager, and turnover has increased by 70% in 2 years. However, this now needs to be translated to profit on the bottom line by careful management of stock, costs and, in particular, the recruitment, training and motivating of volunteers.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following qualifications:
- A belief in the community shop ethos and the role it plays in the surrounding area;
- Responsiveness to customer needs with a strong focus on service quality;
- Commercial skills and financial awareness;
- The management skills to develop and manage a large team of volunteers;
- The ability to delegate roles among staff and volunteers;
- A ‘can-do’ attitude and friendly manner;
- Computer literacy with experience of Microsoft Office and EPOS systems;
- Some experience in catering, including barista skills;
- A minimum of Level 2 Certificate in food and hygiene.
We are offering a basic salary of £19,000 for a 40hr a week with a performance related bonus tied to key targets.
An application form can be downloaded here. Email your completed form to [email protected] or write to us at: Hambledon Village Shop Ltd, The Cricket Green, Hambledon, Surrey GU8 4HF.
Closing date: 2 April 2016.
Tributes to Two Respected Villagers
Hambledon has paid its respects to two residents who contributed a great deal to village life over many years.
Ray Williams, who died in January, took over the running of the village shop with his wife Pat on his retirement in 1982 and together they were involved in a host of Hambledon activities.
Raymond Smith, who also died in January, played an important part in the development of Hambledon Cricket Club, the fete and many other aspects of village life.
The lives and achievements of both were celebrated at packed funeral services at St Peter’s Church.
This month’s Parish Magazine has reports on both and these articles can be found here.

MORE HOMES…NO BUSES?
Hambledon residents have until this weekend to write in support of the village’s threatened bus service, the 503. The consultation period ends on Monday (March 14th) at 9am.
Surrey County Council, which subsidises the 503 and other rural bus routes, wants to hear the views of villagers before making a final decision on the fate of the service. It is reviewing all bus routes in the county as it looks to make cuts to its budget.
Details of the Local Transport Review can be found at https://www.surreysays.co.uk/e-i-directorate-programme-group/ltr
Hambledon Parish Council strongly opposes the proposal to axe the 503. It is asking Surrey County Council to reconsider the issue and perhaps look to amalgamate the service with the 523 Milford Hospital service, which is also under threat. With more than 100 new homes being built beside the hospital, and a proposal to build affordable homes at Lane End, Hambledon, the council believes Surrey County Council should examine how to better integrate the service before making a final decision.
Here is Hambledon Parish Council’s submission to the Surrey County Council review.

Godalming Time Bank
Would you like to share the skills and hobbies you enjoy whilst helping others and making new friends?
If so, you might like to join The Godalming Time Bank for residents of Godalming and surrounding villages.
Anyone can participate. It is a way for people to help others in the community and be rewarded for it in time. For every hour of time you give helping someone, you receive one time credit. You can spend your time credits when you need help from someone else. You can save them or you can donate them back to the Time Bank to reallocate to another person who needs some help.
If you are already busy helping others in the community this does not need to be a regular commitment. Belonging to the bank will help identify those who have particular skills or abilities so that they can be approached if someone has those particular needs. This could include errands, craft or sewing skills, simple DIY, computer skills, leaflet delivery , giving someone a lift or absolutely anything.
Everyone’s time is valued equally. You may have needs but feel you can offer nothing back. Please get in touch and we will still be able to help. You may have lots to offer but feel there is nothing you need. You can donate your time credits to others who might need extra help.

The Time Bank is for everyone and will help to strengthen our community by connecting people who don’t already have a support network around them who they can approach for help or assistance. Social groups can be created and even organisations can get involved.
If you are interested in finding out more please contact The Time Bank Coordinator Fiona Fyfe. Contact Fiona for more information on 07717 618815 or [email protected]. She can also be contacted at The Hub, 94 Godalming High Street on a Friday morning.
