Hambledon Nursery School Children And The Royal Wedding

Hambledon Nursery School children celebrated the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, by learning about marriage customs and staging their own ceremony at the village church.

In the two weeks before the Royal Wedding at Windsor Castle, children were encouraged to bring in family wedding photographs to enable them to make a personal connection to the ceremony. These were displayed in the two classrooms and in the reception area. They also prepared wedding invitations, made bunting and arranged floral displays.

Nicola Collett, head teacher, said this created a “real buzz of excitement” around the nursery school. Children enjoyed making their own plans and parents and teachers found themselves reminiscing about their own wedding day. Many reflected on how wedding dresses had changed over the years.

Several teachers brought in their wedding dresses and wore them in front of the children including Kate Walford who is pictured right. Another, who had recently celebrated her 30th wedding anniversary, brought along her photo album as well as her wedding dress.

Ceremonies in other cultures were also talked about and one parent brought in a beatutiful Indian wedding dress and jewellery while another showed pictures of a family Scottish wedding, with men dressed in kilts.

The school purchased a child’s wedding dress and prince’s outfit. Each day in the lead-up to the Windsor wedding, the children enacted a wedding ceremony. This culminated in them holding their own “wedding” service at St Peter’s Church.

Two children played “bride and grooom” and the rest were guests of honour. Dressed for the occasion – some chose Disney outfits – they walked through the woods from school to church where wedding music was played and a “service” held.

Then it was back to the school for the cutting of the cake. The children had made their own out of papier-mâché but, to their delight, Hambledon’s Crumby Bakery, made and delivered a large lemon and elderflower wedding cake. It was simply iced but with the addition of pre-cut paste shapes for children to decorate with edible pens.

The cake, pictured left, was then cut and portions were sold to parents to raise funds for additional resources for the nursery school.

Nicola said: “All of this led to a wonderful atmosphere at the school in the days leading up to the Royal Wedding.”

Milford Golf Course – 180 houses – Public Exhibition Tuesday 22nd May

The developers of Milford Golf Course are holding an exhibition with an outline of the proposed 180 home re-development of the Golf Course on the South side of Station Lane.  With Station Lane and Milford crossroads already congested at peak times, such a development will put pressure on the infrastructure in our area. With the prospect of the doubling of traffic on this road once Dunsfold Park is built it is vital that residents make their views on record at this exhibition.    All are invited to view on Tuesday 22nd between 3pm and 8pm at the Golf Club in Station Lane.

Hambledon Village Hall serving fund-raising tea and cakes at Vann on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May, 2 pm onwards.

We will serving tea and homemade cakes at Vann on Monday 7th May from 2 pm onwards. Most cakes are baked by village hall committee members. For our effort, the hall usually receives a generous donation from Mary Caroe.  This will be added to hall maintenance fund.

For a change,  the weather looks to be kind to us this year, so please do come and enjoy both the garden and the cakes!

Villagers Urged to be Vigilant After Burglaries

Thieves have stolen property from a house in Hambledon, breaking in during broad daylight.

There have been other break-ins in the area in recent days including an attempt to steal two Land Rover Defenders.

Villagers are urged to ensure their homes and vehicles are securely locked and to report any suspicious activity to police.

Jumble Sale – The Results

Yet again, the villagers of Hambledon have not only given us their jumble but also turned up on Saturday 21 April to buy (not the same things they had donated). Thank you for your generous support. We would also like to thank Michelle, her daughter, Edna Atkin, Pip and Coral who helped man the stalls.

The sale caused a traffic jam. Apologies to the residents opposite the hall as a few cars were sent past their houses to unblock the gridlock.

The Jumble sale together with cash donations from Pat Williams and Philip Underwood have brought the total raised to £1005 for the hall’s maintenance fund. This will go in part towards new chairs and stage curtain.

Annual Village Meeting

Thursday 26th April 7:30 for 8pm at The Village Hall.

Looking forward to see you all for the annual review of the village organisations.

You’ll also be able to sign up for the Village Clean-up on Saturday at 10am and grab your bags and litter pick sticks! 

Sign up sheets and equipment will then be in the Village Shop on Friday.

JUNIOR CRICKET TRAINING STARTS APRIL 21

Hambledon Cricket Club actively encourages youth cricket and holds popular training sessions for boys and girls on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings.

This season’s sessions begin later this month and new recruits are welcome to join. The first Saturday session is on April 21st and NOT April 22nd, an incorrect date in the poster below.

Oakhurst Cottage – National Trust

We are currently recruiting for Oakhurst Cottage guides to join our friendly team of volunteers. Help us to tell the story of this historic cottage and give engaging tours to visitors from all over the world. This is a brilliant opportunity to make friends and learn all about a cottage with a history spanning over 400 years. We’re open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons between April and October and we ask that you are available at least once a fortnight to lend a hand. Applications are now open  and we look forward to hearing from you.
