A New View Of An Old School

Hambledon Nursery School has a strong association with residents of the village. Many helped turn the former Church of England state primary school, which closed its doors in 1983, into what it is today.

Their initiative and enterprise led to the purchase of the Victorian school building and playground in the lovely rural setting of Rock Hill. And they were responsible for its transformation into a  nursery school for two to five-year olds, administered by a charitable trust.

Today the school is a popular choice for parents in Hambledon and beyond. Its strong links with the local community remain in place. Trustees are drawn from the village and include representatives from St Peter’s Church and the Parish Council.

So villagers may like to take a look at the school’s new website which can be found at www.hambledonnurseryschool.co.uk This is beautifully and colourfully illustrated with photographs of the school, including an interesting aerial view. You will find photographs of staff and of children, at work and play.

Hambledon FC Crowned Grounds Team of the Year at Surrey FA Awards

Martyn Grove picked up his Surrey FA Groundsman of the year for the third year running at the Surrey FA Awards night last week. This year assisted by Matt Kiley.

Mark Bright presented the award at the Guildford Harbour Hotel at the Surrey FA Awards. Unfortunately they were only commended at the National level.

A Fantastic achievement on a limited budget at Badger Park. They are both, hard at work getting the pitch ready for the up coming season. We hope to welcome you down for a match this season where you can see the award winning pitch first hand.

Parking at Hambledon Village Shop and St Peter’s Church

Our local farmer, Peter Knight, expects to start harvesting in the next few days. He will therefore be passing through the village with his large tractors & trailers and heavy harvesting equipment. Please be considerate when parking in and around the village, especially near the Village Shop and by the Church, so as not to impede his vehicles. He will be very appreciative of your cooperation.

Currently Peter plans to be hauling grain back past the Village Shop on Monday and Tuesday. Please respect the new “No Parking” signs that will be placed along the cricket green side of the road outside the shop.

As harvesting is very weather dependent he is unable to give further specific future dates but will give more information when possible.

Hambledon Village Shop End of Summer BBQ – Saturday 31st August 12:30pm to 3:30pm

Tickets for the Hambledon Village Shop End of Summer BBQ are now available on-line at hambledonfestival.co.uk and will be available in the Shop soon.

There will be live music and tickets include BBQ food, wonderful salads and an ice cream or strawberries and cream dessert. Come along and enjoy the party while supporting the shop at the same time.

Don’t forget to visit the Village Show before or after the BBQ.

Hydestile Celebrates With A Party In A Phone Box

Hydestile Crossroads residents have held a party in a phone box to celebrate the renovation of the traditional red kiosk and its new role as a location for a defibrillator.

Almost two dozen Crossroaders, past and present, raised a glass of champagne to toast the completed restoration before moving on to a garden party.

The kiosk, a familiar landmark on the approach to Hambledon, looked resplendent with new paint and a new sign around the top of the glass sides stating “Defibrillator”.

The transformation of the former payphone is the work of neighbouring Busbridge Parish Council. The crossroads forms a part of the boundary between it and Hambledon Parish Council. Many rural payphones see little use and Busbridge PC decided it was no longer prepared to pay a maintenance fee to BT for it to remain operational.

Instead it negotiated for BT to remove the phone apparatus and to hand over ownership to the council. It then had the kiosk professionally restored, inside and out (see earlier news story on this website), and for the defibrillator to be installed. The box will continue to illuminate at night.

The initiative was led by Busbridge councillors Alison Martin and John Graves. John, who lives at the crossroads, and his wife Elaine hosted a garden dinner party following the kiosk celebration.

The gathering brought together almost all of the current crossroads residents and the welcome return of a few who have moved away. Continue reading →

Paul Pattinson’s Parish Council departure brings past and present together

Hambledon parish councillors past and present have gathered to mark Paul Pattinson’s 12 years of service to the village.

Paul decided not to stand again at the year’s local government elections. He has been an invaluable member of the parish council and its planning committee and his contribution was praised by chairman John Anderson who, with wife Tucker, hosted a thank-you party at their home.

This was attended by all of the current members and several others who worked alongside Paul during his earlier years on the council, which he joined in January 2007. John thanked Paul for his measured and thoughtful input on a range of village issues and the knowledge he brought to legal and planning matters.

A week later there was an informal meal at the Merry Harriers, with all the current councillors and their partners present. Stewart Payne, vice chairman, said that Paul was a much-liked and respected friend and colleague and would be missed.

Paul responded by saying that he and his wife Vicky appreciated both gatherings. “You are such a harmonious team, and that was reflected in all the chat, and noise level, at our dinner. Hambledon is lucky to have such a good group of people on its Parish Council.”

Parish Magazine Pays Tribute To Two “Great Lives” in July Edition

The families of Mic Coleman and Pat Williams have expressed their gratitude to the people of Hambledon following the funerals of both, held in the past month.

They were much loved and respected residents and both contributed enormously to life in the village.

Mic’s funeral was held at Guildford Crematorium, followed by a gathering at the Merry Harriers. In a message afterwards, his family said: “We would like to thank all those who attended the service at the crematorium and those who sent condolences and thoughtful messages”

Pat’s funeral was held in Hambledon at St Peter’s Church and her sister Margaret Romney said that the love and friendship in the village had been “overwhelming”.

The lives of both have been celebrated in earlier articles on this website. The July edition of the Parish Magazine carries the tributes paid to both at their funerals. It will be on sale at the village shop from tomorrow (Saturday June 29th).

New Associate Minister for St Peter’s

The Rector, The Rev. Simon Taylor, who is also now Area Dean, is delighted to announce that after a careful and prayer-filled interview process the Associate Minister post has been offered to and accepted by The Rev. Simon Willetts. Simon is currently Associate Minister at ChristChurch, Virginia Water. He and his wife, Naomi, will be moving into Mervil Bottom in the summer. He will be formally licensed and welcomed at a special service at St Peter’s on Sunday 15 September 2019 at 6pm with a reception afterwards at Clock Barn. We are obliged to point out that the appointment remains subject to clear DBS, medicals and paperwork.

This appointment would not have been possible without the overwhelming generosity and support of all those in our village community who responded to the fundraising campaign. At the recent Annual Church Meeting the Treasurer, Andrew Dunn, was delighted to announce that we hit the pledge target. Visit Vann gardens

The gardens at Vann will be open for the last time this season for the National Garden Scheme on Sunday 23 June from 10 till 6 p.m.

Refreshments will be available all day including home made biscuits and Vann’s Famous flapjacks all in aid of Grand daughter Mary’s sponsored trip to Greenland . Vann Garden is also open every Wednesday and by appointment.

Road Closures

Markwick Lane will be temporarily closed between the junction of Mare Lane and the access road to Little Burgate Farm for one week from 24th June 2019.  Traffic will be diverted along Markwick Lane, Godalming Road, The Street and Mare Lane.  This is to allow cabling and tree cutting works for BT Openreach. It is anticipated that the works will be carried out between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

The road will remain open to pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and equestrians during this time.
