Having raised an astonishing £1486 for MacMillan Cancer Research, Eliza and Christie are now aiming to raise £1000 for Hydestile Animal Hospital. Along with a wide array of cakes and bakes there will also be an antiques sale.
A memorial bench commemorating the life of Raymond Smith and his contribution to village life – and to Hambledon Cricket Club in particular – was unveiled at a short ceremony on Saturday September 10.
A planned cricket match between a Hambledon Village XI and a Family and Friends XI was rained off but spirits were not dampened inside the pavilion where a toast was drunk in Raymond’s memory and a barbecue served under a gazebo outside.
Andy Hinde, club chairman introduced Mic Coleman, long-serving club president who spoke of Raymond’s immense contribution to the club, a driving-force behind fund-raising and an enthusiastic and active supporter.
His widow Peggy then unveiled the bench assisted by son Charlie and daughter Rosie. They are pictured sitting on the bench, the first of many who will relax on its timbers to enjoy cricket on the green.
Raymond, who lived at Lane End, died in January this year and his funeral service at St Peter’s Church was packed as tributes were given to his role as dedicated family man, loyal friend and outstanding contributor towards many aspects of village life.
His son Charlie spoke fondly of learning to play on the cricket green where his father was a convivial and welcoming figure on the boundary.
It is planned that the memorial cricket fixture will be re-arranged for next season.

The English Rural Housing Association planning application has finally been submitted seeking permission to build 17 affordable and market price homes on the Orchard Farm site and it is important to hear the views of villagers before the Parish Council considers the issue.
This is a reminder that a meeting is to be held this Tuesday (September 13) at the Village Hall at 8pm and it is hoped that as many people as possible will attend so that opinions from across the parish can be heard.
The Parish Council held one open meeting when the ERHA first made its proposals known after acquiring the Wormley Lane/Petworth Road site in 2014. Now that a planning application for 12 affordable and five market price houses has been submitted to Waverley Borough Council the latest meeting is to hear from villagers before the Parish Council comments on the application.

I am sure that we all remember Raymond Smith with much fondness. He was a fantastic supporter of Hambledon in so many different ways , and his untimely death was a great loss to all of us.
As a tribute to Raymond, the Cricket Club will be hosting a memorial fixture this Saturday, 10th September, between Hambledon CC and the “Raymond Smith family and friends XI” starting 1.30pm. Please, please come and join us.
There will also be a Barbeque afterwards , kindly provided by Peggy Smith , to which everybody who knew Raymond would be most welcome. Please feel free to bring a burger or a sausage with you, and come join us to celebrate Raymond Smith’s massive contribution to the Cricket Club, and to the village. We anticipate the barbeque might run between 5.30 – 7.30pm … depending on the weather.

That’s my response to the Surrey Hill Challenge – though I’m walking rather than running it (just to make sure that I finish) – on Sunday 25 September. The route is from the Duke of Kent School, just outside Ewhurst, to Dorking; the distance is 13 ½ miles.
Would you be willing to sponsor me to help raise money for the Hambledon Village Trust to build a new customer toilet for the Village Shop? (It’s likely to fall foul of health and safety if it doesn’t install one soon).
To quote the opposition, “every little helps”; but £1 per mile would be great and anything over that would add wings to my boots.

Hambledon Parish Council is facilitating a public meeting to be held in the Village Hall on Tuesday 13 September starting at 20.00 to enable villagers to express their views on the application. The Parish Council would like its comments to reflect the views of everyone in Hambledon, wherever they live; and to this end hopes that as many people as possible will attend.
All villagers can also submit their personal comments direct to Waverley – but please note that the cut-off date for receipt of representations is Friday 23 September.

h service at Hambledon Church is on Sunday 4th September at 10.30am. All the usual crafts, songs and fun for all ages, as we learn about St Peter’s story. Peter’s life was full of ups and downs, just like ours. Sometimes he let his friend, Jesus, down badly; but Jesus didn’t give up on him and he doesn’t give up on us. Come along to find out more. All welcome.
Earlier this year the Shop got an internet upgrade and many of the customers and volunteers are taking advantage of the fast (38mbps) internet access now available. No password or login is required to use the internet service at the shop, just connect your device to the shop wi-fi when you’re in the vicinity and you’re up and running. The wi-fi extends to all the outside seating, including the new Queen’s bench.
In July the card terminal in the shop was upgraded to contactless. The more customers who use this the better, as it speeds up queue movement when the shop gets busy. Most cards now allow for contactless payment, just tap your card on the terminal when the amount has been entered into it, you’ll hear a beep confirming the payment has been made. Apple Pay is also supported so you can use your iPhone or Apple Watch to make a payment. The maximum allowed for a contactless payment is £30.
The Shop also now has it’s own web application. If you go to http://hambledonvillageshop.co.uk/hvs1 you can monitor in real time how the shop is performing via a screen of widgets. Click or tap on any of the widgets to dig deeper. The app does not work correctly on some versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, but is fine on other browsers and mobile devices.
And, just one more thing… The Shop is active on Social Media in various ways:
Facebook, Google and TripAdvisor all allow you to write reviews of the shop, hint, hint….
Hambledon Parish Council is to hold talks with Surrey County Council and Waverley Borough Council to press for a review of the way the village bus service operates in the hope it can be made more commercially viable.
Suggestions from villagers would be welcome, either by leaving a website comment on this article or posting suggestions in the Forum section.
The 503 route, which is the only public transport service available to residents, connects the village with Milford, Godalming and Guildford and is especially important to the elderly and infirm wanting to visit shops, banks and surgeries. It is shown here in the picturesque setting of the farm buildings at the Hydestile Crossroads as its leaves the village headed for Milford.
It is operated by Stagecoach but is heavily subsidised by Surrey County Council. Recently it faced the axe, only to be reprieved after the parish council and residents lobbied for it to continue.
The council is keen to see if changes can be made to increase revenue and prevent another cost-cutting exercise threatening its existence the next time SCC reviews its subsidised bus operations.
Currently the 503 operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, twice in each direction, beginning at Lane End at 9.15 and 12.15. Although a vital service for older residents its timing and infrequency means it is of no use to school children or commuters, despite its route taking it past Milford Station and local schools.
Surrey County Council has indicated that it is prepared to discuss the route with the parish council and others and it is hoped this will happen soon.

Becky currently lives in Bethnal Green, London but is originally from Hambledon and so is excited to be having her first exhibition in the pub.
Inspiration for her work comes from far and wide; a road trip from the Yukon (Canada) to the US through Montana, The Grand Tetons National Park and Nashville to name a few, The Lake of Stars festival in Malawi, her friend’s farm in Somerset, her Mum’s beautiful English country garden and cowboys!

It’s not just smooth snakes, slow worms and sand lizards that are returning as a result of Stephen Dean’s conservation work on Hambledon Common. The latest exciting arrival is the Silver-studded Blue butterfly.
On July 4th Harry Clarke, butterfly recorder for Surrey, visited Hambledon and Buss’s Commons. As well as the usual Meadow Brown and Large Skipper, he found two Small Coppers and, best of all, two Silver-studded Blues. The Silver-studded Blue is a rare heathland butterfly, confined to small colonies in England and Wales. It owes its name to the male whose wings are blue with a dark border on the upper side and black, orange and green spots (“studs”) and flecks on the underside. The female is brown and, like the male, also has distinct metallic spots on her hind wings.
Silver-studied Blues have declined substantially since the 1970s and are now of conservation concern; so finding them on Hambledon Common is especially good news. They are dependent on the Small Black Ant (Lasius niger) throughout their larval and pupal stages. The ants feed on the honeydew-like liquid secreted by the larvae. In return, the ants take the larvae down into their nests and protect them. The ants nest in bare un-shaded spots such as those parts of the Common where rabbits keep the vegetation short and expose areas of open ground. The butterflies emerge in June and feed on the nectar of the bell heather and crossleaved heath, which are in flower during their flight season.
Notice from the Trustees of Hambledon Nursery School
Hambledon Nursery School is an Outstanding-rated nursery school in the village. We are seeking a replacement for one of our Trustees who, due to other commitments, is planning to stand down.
Trustees are drawn from different areas of village life, and in this instance we are seeking one to fulfil the role of “village trustee”; someone living in or near the village, who is passionate about the success of the school, and its part in the village community.
Board members need to be able to commit to 6 evening meetings a year, where they bring their own experience and judgement to educational and management issues. They may in addition like to attend other nursery highlights – nativity/leaver’s service/‘fun’ events and so on.
