A reminder that the memorial service to celebrate the life of Mary Caroe takes place on Friday (July 1st) at Godalming Parish Church, Church Street, starting at 1.30pm.

Mary contributed greatly to life in Hambledon and her many friends in the village are invited to attend, and to join the family afterwards for tea at Vann.

The Mary Caroe Cup, the annual cricket fixture between Hambledon Cricket Club and Hambledon Village Shop will take place this Sunday 26th June. The match will start at 2:30pm, BBQ food will be available from 4pm and there will be a bar. Please come along and support the players.

The Cricket Club currently hold the cup after a one run win in an exciting match last year (click here for the match report). Rumour has it both sides will be putting out strong teams this year, hopefully it will be another closely fought contest.

The long awaited Hambledon Midsummer Fête will take place this Saturday 18th June. The Fête will open at 12:00pm and close at 4:30pm. There will be kid’s races, the Owl and Hawk Man, Philip’s famous Dog Show and food and drink stalls along with lots of other stalls with local produce, activities and games. 

If anyone has spare bottles for the bottle stall, please drop them off at the Village Shop. If you have plants that might be suitable for the plant stall please contact Mary Grove. Bric a Brac can be dropped off at the Cricket Green on the day between 8:30am and 11am.

The weather for the day currently looks set to be perfect – sunny intervals 23 deg C.

Prizes will be delivered to the winners. Well done to the winners and thank you to everyone who took part. £48 was collected for the Shop’s Ukraine Charity.

Hambledon has experienced severe traffic congestion this morning as a result of the A283 Petworth Road being closed from Skinners Lane, by the Winterton Arms, through to Lane End. 

The road closure is likely to remain for several days.

Hundreds of cars have been using the narrow Pockford Lane and Vann Lane as a diversion, leading to a jam forming in Hambledon on Cricket Green by the shop. Thanks to Martin Thompson taking on traffic management duties, some 150 grid-locked cars have now been able to make passage through the village. The Parish Council has informed police and traffic officers are to be sent.

The closure will have an impact on the many Hambledon villagers planning on attending the memorial service for John and Annie Tidmarsh, taking place at St Mary’s Church. Chiddingfold, at 3.30pm this afternoon. Please check on road condition before setting off, if you can, and allow for a longer journey time.

Perhaps the best way from Hambledon to the church is to cross the A283 at Lane End into New Road, turn left into Combe Lane by Witley Station approach, and follow the road through to Chiddingfold, via Ridgley Road and Coxcombe Lane to arrive on the green beside the church. (Although Combe Lane was due to be closed today due planned roadworks, this has not so far taken place)

Please remember, there is no parking at the church itself.

• Update: The situation in Hambledon had improved by lunchtime today, thanks in part to our shop staff and volunteers taking measures to aid traffic flow. Vann Lane and Pockford Lane will no doubt remain busy but traffic is moving. According to the bus operator Stagecoach, the A283 is not expected to reopen for several days.

A few seats on tables have become available for the Hambledon Midsummer Ball, to be held on the Cricket Green on Saturday 18th June. These seats are available at £35 each and would suit individuals or couples who would be happy to join an existing group on their table. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

The London Dynamo Summer Road Race is taking place on Sunday 19th June. Some junctions on the route will be temporarily closed by qualified marshals for a couple of minutes to allow cyclists to pass safely. The course runs down anti clockwise on a circular route from Prestwick Lane. They will head north up Petworth Road through Chiddingfold and finally back south at Wormley down Combe Lane. The numbers on the map show the marshalled junctions.

We remain in hope that the weather will be on our side, but please come weather prepared. In the event of inclement weather there will be some room in the Village Hall for those who need it. Most will need to just work with what happens.

Tables on Malthouse Lane are not allocated they are a free for all, just turn up with your food and drink, bring a chair if you have one and a pencil for the quiz. The Street Party will run between 12pm and 4pm.

Malthouse Lane will be closed between the Cricket Green turn off and Malthouse Lane between 10:30am and around 4pm,

Please do not bring gazebos or dogs.There will be access for people wanting to drop off people or provisions until 12pm, ask a marshall to move a road closed sign or move it yourself.

The Hambledon Church Flower Festival will run from 9pm to 6pm on Saturday 4 June and 9pm to 6pm on Sunday 5th June. Please note that there is a church service at 9:30am on Sunday 5th June to which all are welcome.

Over the Jubilee Bank Holidays and weekend you can take part in cycling and walking Treasure Hunts around the village. Clue sheets are available to pick up at the Village Shop. Entries cost £1 per entry with proceeds going to the Ukrainian Fund. Answers will be available on the Village Web Site from 5pm on Sunday 5 June and the winners will be announced at the end of the weekend’s festivities.

This evening from 8:30pm join us at the Village Shop for a torch-lit walk, starting at 9pm, up to the viewpoint on Hambledon Common to watch the National Beacon lighting across the south at 9:45pm. Bring your brightest battery torches.

The Hambledon Village Shop Choir will once again be performing with the Junction 4 Big Band at Jazz On The Green on the evening of Friday 17th June. If you’d like to join the choir you’d be very welcome, enthusiasm is more important than ability….

Practices will be held at The Village Hall on Wednesday 1st June and Wednesday 8th June at 7:30pm and on Sunday 12th June at 2pm. Feel free to come along. If you’d like to receive music and lyrics for the songs the choir will be singing just email [email protected].

On Saturday June 4th between 2:30pm and 5:30pm, 12 talented and generous green fingered villagers will be participating in The Jubilee Open Gardens.
