Recycling those empty medicine blister packs

Hopefully you are fortunate and don’t have regular medical prescriptions! However if you do, then each time you finish a pack it should go in your wastebin, to subsequently go to landfill. As the blister packs are made from rigid plastic sides with aluminium foil they require specialist treatment. Terracycle is a group that specialises in dealing with ‘difficult to recycle’ packaging and can organise this. I was concerned about the final destination of the items they collect but it would seem they carry out due diligence to ensure their contractors are doing what they say!

Locally the packs can be taken to Superdrug in Guildord for collection by Terracycle. Clearly it makes more sense to take a large amount there, rather than making individual journeys. Terracycle make a small donation to Marie Curie Foundation during the process. I have a collection box on my front doorstep (5 Duncombs Cotts GU8 4DB) and also a box next to the telephone kiosk by Hambledon Village Stores, and am happy to make the journey to Guildford when I have several sacks full! So please save those packs and drop them in when passing – a little more plastic and aluminium reused and prevented from entering landfill!

Hambledon’s Community Speed Watch Needs More Volunteers

The speed watches have been in action in the village for the past few months, hopefully encouraging drivers to slow down! Teams of 2-4 spend a maximum of 2hrs at one of three locations, at times to suit team members.

Some more participants would be much appreciated – in order to take part the police require your attendance at a training session, and there are two coming up in January – either Tuesday 7th 12pm-3pm or Wednesday 8th January 6:30pm-9.00pm, at the Sea Cadets Centre, Dapdune Wharf, Guildford.

Please contact Mary Grove on 01483 415815 ASAP if you might be interested. The speed watches have also proved to be quite sociable!

Learn How to use an Automated External Defibrillator

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

How many times have you seen an AED and maybe wondered how to use it? They do give verbal instructions, but if you would like to learn more about what to do in an emergency and practice with an AED, we are holding courses in Hambledon. The course costs £20 and is run by St Barts. You can choose from Saturday 12th May (am or pm) or Saturday 19th May 2 to 5pm.

To book your place, please call Mary Grove on 01483 415815 or email grovemum@aol.com.

Life Saving and AED Courses

Two years ago a number of villagers attended Life Saving and AED courses run by St Barts. All who attended agreed how valuable they were.

A further two courses have now been organised. They will be on Saturday 12 May (10-1pm or 2-5pm) and Saturday 19th May (2-5pm) and will be held in the Church Room. The cost will be £20 and, after expenses are taken out, the remainder pays for courses held in less well-off areas of London.

If you would be interested in attending, please contact Mary Grove on 01483 415815 or at grovemum@aol.com.

Fund Raiser for Hambledon Village Hall

Come and see the season’s fashions, try on and buy on the night at greatly reduced prices to help raise funds for the Village Hall.

Something for all (well – ladies aged 25-95!). Refreshments and an excellent raffle (prizes to include a manicure). We will be looking for some local ladies to model too – contact Mary Grove 01483 415815 if you would like to try the catwalk!
